Didnt think you could narrow it down. I put his Reg number into the vehicle finder....

Your list comes up as 89, Mine as 88...

I missed the reg somehow, i just went on being fairly sure the 820 with "O" series lump was only from 1988 for a very short period. If you look at the head gasket set i copy and pasted into my previous post it says 1988-90, whether they were made that long or not i'm not sure but they were fairly short lived as a model.

Bit of a shame really as it was a good idea in theory but i suspect BL/ARG/Rover Group had several twin carb "O" series engines left over from the 2.0 HLS Ambassador (and/or VDP) and needed to find a way to sell them. They already had EFi versions of the Montego and Maestro so the only way of getting a reasonable chance would be an entry level 800 for the fleet markets.

Just me being cynical! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks guys, hg ordered. I'm doing the bearings on one of my supercharged Monaros first then it's the Rover. Really looking forward to driving it as the short blast I had in it felt really nice.

Short blast in the Rover or the Monaro? :?

Loads of those round here, most are sedans and badged as Chevrolet Luminas though. There's a few Coupés but still badged as Luminas, probably pretty docile compared to yours as they're for the USA market. :D

The Rover Dave. The Red Monaros 635bhp and my black one will be (it's not finished yet) north of 1600bhp to be set up to run on the Bonneville salt flats. They're both a bit stupid to really enjoy tbh.

Ah i see! Wasn't sure!

I take it the red Monaro is a bit of a toy and what sort of speed do you hope to hit at the salt flats Jez?

Dave

For a class win it needs to be capable of over 280mph. It's going to take several years to get the car ready which is fine as it's an adventure I plan to have when I retire.

That's quite a speed! Is it an out and out race or is it individual runs?
I bet the red one is fun on the motorways as well, that kind of power would soon eat the Bratwurst-Bangers for breakfast on the motorway!  :D

It'll be individual runs over the 5 mile course. Car will be street legal and on pump gas (although not the US crap) No aerodynamic alterations to the body from original are allowed either.
The Red ones ok but it's a bit brittle and tends to melt pistons driven hard so I don't bother.

I won't ask how you know this!

Is that best of three runs or do you only get one shot at it? Shame you can't get some "petrol" from "work" to give it some real octane to burn on the strip! That comes out of a pump doesn't it? Not the usual street-side filling station pump but a pump nonetheless! :D

Ha yes it does, but that would be cheating. Run is one way but if you break a record you immediately have to put your car into park ferme until the next day then repeat the run. Provided you achieve the same speed or higher in exactly the same mile zone (e.g. 1-2 2-3 3-4 4-5) then it's a new class record. If two vehicles in the same class are eligible to run then the car with the lowest speed runs first so that it can (briefly)hold the record.

Crikey, they know how to complicate things! Anything could effect the result the next day, humidity, wind, driver inconsistency (despite best human efforts) and probably a whole load of other factors. I can see it's fair in one way though.

Out of interest, if that record run is achieved on the last day, what happens? Yes you could put your car into park ferme but there wouldn't be a "next day" so do you get an extra run on the same day to secure your record?
Cheers,
Dave

I have 2003 3.8L Chevy Lumina coupe - superb car and perfectly fast enough for real world use, yet still capable of a bit over 30mpg on a run.
Out in the desert with a 1998 Grand Cherokee V8, 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4L and a 1997 Chevy Tahoe V8. Back home: 1969 MGC GT

Would that be the same/similar to the Buick 3.8 V6 Richard? I believe Chevrolet and Buick shared a V6 3.8L engine for many years (decades in fact) that was derived from the old Buick 215 cu. in. engine better known to us as the Rover V8 and originally codenamed "Fireball" way back in the early sixties.

I know later this engine was discontinued but replaced by the GM V6 "High Value" engines of similar displacement and as far as i can tell, just an updated version of the old 3.8L lump.
Cheers,
Dave
