Some fault finding on my headlights.

They work quite intermittent, suddenly they go out. Sometimes by pressing the button for the full beam blink they lit up again. This makes my think the problem is in the stalk? But I can’t really understand why they would turn off if they are turned on and working? Surely no power goes through the stalk? Isn’t that just to close the circuit to the relay? Or is some current always running through the stalk, by a closed circuit to the relay and if the circuit breaks the relay switch off?

Henrik - can you describe the exact symptoms of the lights going on and off and what position the light switch is in please? I'm a bit confused at the moment!
Cheers,
Dave

Firstly they have been working perfectly since I soldered the tall relay. Just yesterday or the day before that I noticed them failing.
I turn them (The headlights ) on with the Switch on the stalk. Sidelights and rear works but the main are not. Sometimes when i click on-off-on-off Swifty 10 times they come on. Sometimes not. Sometimes when I press the small button to flash the full beam they turn on. But after a minute or so they shut down again.

I suspect the stalk/switches but the thing that puzzles me is why they don’t stay on once they are on? So current is running through the stalk to the relay?

It does sound as if the switch is potentially faulty Henrik, have you got any switch/contact cleaner at all?
Cheers,
Dave

Yes but I’ve taken it apart and cleaned it before so it’s mechanical. I might have time tomorrow to strip the stalk again, could be one of the small springs or contact shims that are lost/Bent.

But I’m correct then thinking that the current flow through the stalk to the relay all the time and if it breaks the circuit it cuts the lights?

As far as i remember without checking the diagram, yes, you'e correct.

It could simply be lack of use again and some exercise of the switch after dousing it with contact cleaner will restore it to working condition. Failing that you may have to replace the stalk.

Thanks Dave. Those electric gremlins aren’t my friends you know. :) I’ll give it some cleaner spray today, and hopefully will have some time to strip it tomorrow.

Off fishing today! Social distancing in a small boat in the middle of a lake! :D

It seems I need some help here. It appears I can’t make the low beam lit up no matter which cables I short. The parking/side lights work, and full beam ”blink” works but can’t get the low beam on.

Any ideas?

Can you remind me if your VIN is above or below 276672 please Henrik? It seems as if you hvae lost the feed to the switch for headlights if you have no dipped or full beam except flash which is a different circuit (slightly) but have you checked the fuses at all?
Cheers,
Dave

218642 Dave,

I can’t see any blown fuses but which are they again so I can try another fuse?

I hope it’s not any issues with the tall relay that I resoldered....... :(

Thanks Henrik, i'll have a look and see if something springs to mind - my internet is playing up at the moment so might take a while!

Might be worth double checking that relay, just pull it out (i know it's not terrifically easy to get to) and open it up and check for any dodgy joints. If there are none, refit and tst the lights as i have another hunch concerning that relay.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave,
I’m having this week off so plan A is to use tomorrow to see whats going on armed with my multimeter.

To be honest I’m considering a new small loom with external relay to run the lowbeam. I’m pretty 100% sure it’s some dodgy connection somewhere as they suddenly comes to life for a few seconds. So nu blown fuse. But the fuse might be corroded still so will be having a look.

I’ll try to rip the tall relay aswell to see for any obvious umpahlumpahs and gremlins! :)

Definately ”tall relay” issues. I took the panel down and took it apart and sprayed and refitted and now the headlamps work again. Good to know where the problem is! But, I presume it will come back again so probably need to sort out a major solution in the future.

Step one is to use the car now hoping it will last and in the meantime trying to locate a new or second hand relay.
