That's great, cheers Scott. I'm on the hunt.

No joy at my local MG factors - they've turned into a Moss, so they only really do 'historic' MGs, sadly.

Good news - my master cylinder is fine (although I did snap up a spare on ebay any way when it cropped up cheap)

BAD news:

Got a leak in the hard line extremely close to where it passes through the bodywork.

This might be a mobile mechanic job, and I'm not thrilled about it either.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkkkkkkk!!!!

That's a scary one! :o

If you can find the brake pipe inside the car and unclip it, you should be able to pull enough through to work on it. You could then use a compression fit brake pipe joiner after cutting out the offending section.

Alternatively, make a new section of brake pipe to go to the union where the flexi joins it and run the new pipe inside the car and use one of these joiners to connect it :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-Pcs-3-16-B ... 4018819805

I don't know if that's the right size, you'll need to measure it to be sure but gives you a couple of low cost options without resorting to a mobile mechanic to sort it.

Put some cling film over the top of the reseveroir before you start to help prevent fluid loss and air getting in the system and you should be ok.
Cheers,
Dave

Cheers Dave - I've cleared the interior (folding seat, rubber soundproofing etc) so that the pipe is visible inside the car, but I'm definitely going to get someone else on it.

I've read too many horror stories of crappy flaring tools, mismatched union fittings etc to just reckon that the money will be worth it to make it go away, and leave me free to sort my leaking PAS reservoir. It also means I can replace the bottom balljoints on my Merc, but I'm not doing that until the Rover is mobile again.

If that works for you Adrian then go for it. Might be an idea to invest in a new flexi hose as well, just in case said moby mechanic manages to damage it while removing the hard line.
Cheers,
Dave

Yep, already en route :)

Pipe replacement is £40, booked in tomorrow morning. Can honestly say that's money I'm happy to spend.

I thought you might be ahead of me on the flexi! :P

In fairness, if that £40 includes the pipe and labour, it's not a bad price. :D

Ive just logged back in to the forum for the first time in ages. Very pleased to see the car is still going, horrified to read some of the trouble you have had! That butchery around the pedals wasnt me. I think i fitted a new washer and split pin? I remember thinking it was werid and not understanding why anyone would be in there with a grinder.

Ive been approached by someone through retro rides who saw my old thread and wants to buy a white gold vitesse. So if you did want to sell it i can pass on your details.

Will stay logged in to watch more progress.

James

Hi James, great to hear from you.

It's certainly been an interesting few years, but I've no regrets. Other than the bent head + powersteering pump, nothing massively unexpected for a 24 year old car.

Current snag list for me:

Very, very light and feel-less steering
Needs a service
Sort the beginning of dash-lift

Also pretty sure I've still got water coming in the boot, it was only dry for a matter of months!

Ive recently been introduced to this stuff...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Captain-Tolley ... 277&sr=8-1

Its really good at small leaks. Ultra thin, so not good for big gaps.

Captain Tolleys is good stuff from what i've heard. I suppose you could tape up the bottom end of the leak with duct tape or similar and pour it in the top and see how that does with bigger leaks.
Cheers,
Dave

Yes, I used it fairly liberally last year and it was quite successful, especially around seam gaps and shrinking rubber. I don't know how long lasting it is though.

I used Tolley on the windscreen of the Sterling. Being of low viscosity, the idea is that it will follow the same path water does if you're anywhere close to the point of ingress. I had some delamination at the bottom of the screen (top as well) and it was able to work it's way up (!) through capillary action. I believe it then sets flexable. A bit ashamed to admit it but I then went over that gap at the bottom of the screen with Gorilla tape to help to seal off that area, it's just a well that holds water. And as it's under the scuttle panel, can't be seen and should weather quite well.

After seeing your leaking metal brake pipe video it made me take a closer look at mine, although a bit corroded I never considered them a risk.

Going to replace both sides on mine, I recommend you all check this pipe carefully.

Are yours replaced now Adrian?

Yeah - couldn't agree more. They're so exposed, and although they appeared in decent shape, it would be so easy for them to catch a nick,

All replaced fine, with copper line back to the cover plate under the rear seat, so shouldn't be a problem. The garage didn't refit the rubber grommet/boot before making up the flare and union which was annoying, but I managed to get a rubber grommet in place once it was back home, so it does at least keep the road mess out.
