Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
In the mean time, I've swapped the pulley from the Land Rover tensioner on to the old tensioner.
All good, nice and quiet tensioner.
Thanks Rich!
And that's a £15 tensioner next to a £150 tensioner.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Only thing that caught me out was the reverse thread on the new tensioner! Impact gun wasn't shifting it until I reversed it...

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Cheers Mark, that's the one. As mine will be, once this new pulley arrives and I can fit the new belt I have waiting for it.Fastback wrote: ↑Sun Jun 13, 2021 6:35 pmI seem to remember some difficulty/confusion when doing the belt/alternator on my Vitesse Lux.
Yes, the main difference at the time was the 'Lux' variant having climate control and standard just ordinary blowers. I have just checked mine again and the belt is 6 ribbed with five ribs on all wheels including alternator. Perhaps that helps.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Time to swap alternator pulleys
No need to fuss about with cranked spanners etc. 24mm socket and an impact gun. Brrrzzzzzzz....
Dave I know you wanted dimensions of the new one
Side by side comparison

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Thanks Adrian, looks like that will be perfect for what i need!
A 24mm nut you say? They must have beefed them up at some point!
Is it all nice and quiet now and running as it should?

That's good to hear. It's something that we "Jeepers" do all the time. You can buy Jeep pulleys without the tensioner attached

Yep - all looking pretty decent. And yes, definitely 24mm. I can remember that, because I run out of ring spanners at 22mm!scoobyh123 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 15, 2021 8:35 pmThanks Adrian, looks like that will be perfect for what i need!

Although I have just started to get a hefty tick from the injectors. Come on! Sometimes it'd be nice just to drive the thing!

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Add 300ml of synthetic ATF to the petrol tank if it's full, if it's half full, half that amount.
It will give the injectors and fuel system a good clean and lube, also worth adding 0.5L of the same to the engine oil as it might be a hydraulic ilfter sticking, adding it to the engine oil will clean the inside of the engine, revive oil seals, free sticky piston rings, free sticking hydraulic lifters and generally improve things.
These days when i do an oil/filter change on either of my beasts (even though the Volvo has solid lifters) first fluid in after the sump plug is replaced is 0.5L Carlube ATF-U which i also use in both gearboxes (it's Honda Z-1 compatible) and for PAS in both and my trolley jacks and bottle jacks. It has an SAE viscosity of 32 so is ideal as hydraulic fluid replacement in jacks etc - have been tempted to use it in the brake system but haven't yet!

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Good, solid MOT pass just achieved this weekend,
Going back for a CV boot as the only advisory - it looks a bit sorry, and it's a job I hate so don't mind farming it out to the pros.
Tester also pointed out to me some tired looking D-bushes for the ARB, plus the ARb itself being slightly out of alignment (it is almost touching on one side).
Also pointed out some play in the lower mounting bushes for the shock absorbers - is that item 3 on this?

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Rimmers have the D bushes expected 25/11 for the ARB so you're in luck there Adrian as long as they land!
https://rimmerbros.com/Item--i-RBX100500
The front dampers are part of the Chapman strut and as such, don't have lower bushes. Don't know if he means the control arm bushes where the yoke for the Chapman strut fits to the control arm but yes, that would be item #3 - i suggest you ask for clarification when it goes for the CV boot and actually get them to show you the play in the bushes. I know this may sound a bit pedantic but wouldn't be the first time someobody has been caught out by vague terminology!
Congrats on the pass too!

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
He did show me the movement - it was where the bottom of the damper met the lower arm. So that's 3, right?
Damnit - pricey and a swine to replace I imagine. I wonder if they can be polybushed? I'm still in 'tighten up the drive' mode at the moment, so really don't mind a firmer ride.
Everything else he attempted to move was pleasingly solid (I'd let him know that I was clonk-hunting, so wanted to know everything, regardless of MOT status)

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Is it worth considering Powerflex poly bushes? I fitted them (purple) to the front of my Vitesse. Yes, they're more expensive but firms things up a bit and they will last.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
The D bushes are reltively easy to replace, drive onto a pair of ramps, crawl under with bushes and a 13mm socket, 4" extension and a ratchet. Undo the two bolts holding each clamp on (same as Rover 75 rear ARB D bush clamps), pull the clamp off the D bush, spread the D bush and pull it off the ARB then clean the ARB and clamp then Haynes it.
Worth a smear of silicone grease on the outer mating faces of the D bushes so the clamps slide on easily but it's thankfully one of those 10 minute jobs that really is 10 minutes as long as the bolts aren't siezed in the crossmember. I also smeared the threads of the bolts for the clamps with copper grease to aid future removal/refitting.
Powerflex bushes might be a little tighter but the RBX100500 bushes are harder rubber to cope with the 26mm ARB so there's not a wild difference in the two except in cost. The Powerflex ones are ~£10 more once you take Rimmers P&P into account on top of the £10.44 each price, the polyurethane bushes should last longer than rubber but it's entirely down to your choice.

Re: Mercedade's '97 Vitesse Lux
Just used marks link to the Powerflex site to check on something i thought i remembered. I remembered right, they do a harder set of poly bushes for the 800 as well including (to use their description) lower shock mounting bushes :
https://www.dcperformance.co.uk/uprated ... r/800.html
Being stiffer PU they have adjusted the price accordingly but it's handy to know they're still available - thanks Mark!
