Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
I'm pretty sure it's location #17 on this diagram Scott :
Disconnecting it will force the ECU to ignore it and substitute an engine temp of 60C so cold starting will be difficult, hence suggesting starting it then switching off and unplugging the CTS.

Ah Coolant Temp Sensor! I've changed that on TB2 recently when the fan wouldn't kick in.
I'll try that at the weekend.

That's the kiddie, i have a hunch but not going to say anything until the results of your disconnection test.

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
Mobile Mech suggests possible fuel pump issue?
Tend to disagree as it does it on gas too. I'm going to see if I have a spare ECU to swap over after doing the CTS test.
e-bay showing lots of differing types - Which would be suitable if I decide to renew it?

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
Which pumps are being shown on ebay? Many sellers assume just because it fits one variant of a model, it fits all and will perform well for all. As you have a n/asp 820, you only need the basic spec pump, the 2.0 turbo and V6 models need a higher output and pressure - can't recall all the figures now. One for the latter could be used but is likely to cost you more so wouldn't gain anything for the extra money.
I would certainly diagree if it does it on gas as well, that points to either ECU and/or ignition as fuel is eliminated.
Another couple of possibilities are the MAP sensor (built in to the ECU) or maybe the IAT (Intake Air Temperature) sensor - can't remember where this one is but somewhere on the air intake system, usually between the air filter and throttle body.

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
Had a play today on TGM.
Disconnecting the coolant temp sensor did not make a difference.
I found an ECU in the spares box so took out the battery and fitted the spare ECU. (It didn't have MEMS written on the label so may not be compatible...)
Car would start, rev, then die. Would not idle.
Put original ECU back in and no change, although the pressure sensor port is loose and could be letting in moisture.
No progress I'm afraid.

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
Symptoms of the immobiliser (96-on cars) not allowing fueling. Will start, rev and die. If you have the fob that goes with that ECU (and possibly some opther bits too) then use the fob to lock/unlock the car and it should then start and run.
However, disconnecting the CTS implies there's a wiring fault somewhere which is what my hunch was. If you get you multimeter and check continuity of the wires from the CTS back to the ECU (CTS and ECU unplugged) and also to earth (shouldn't be connected to earth) to make sure everything is ok, you may just find a loss of continiuty on one or both wires.

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
Had a strange one last night with TB2.
We were in Hull last night to see Half Man Half Biscuit with my son driving and me drinking!
Got to the car after the gig, son turns on ignition and no sign of starting. No click or anything. Checked headlights and there was battery power. Thought it might be the push button thing under the bonnet- No. Locked and Unlocked - No.
Ignition on and a push to bump start and it fired up.
Looked not too bad a job to change out the starter so I went out to check access. Pulled off the solenoid wire and remade it.
It Lives !
That has saved me a few hours work!

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
TB2 passed MOT today. Phew!
Have been recommended a local garage who are supposed to be very good at fault finding so I will take TGM there for some looking at.

Congrats on the pass Scott and good luck with TGM - let us know how it goes!
PS - have you done a compression test on TGM?

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
If it's CTS based issue, you'll need to check all the LPG relays as one of them is used to short a known resistance across the CTS to fool the MEMS into running closed loop immediately.
Stops the two ECUs fighting each other.
Either it's got a duff connection, relay has died or something unrelated.
Just thought I'd chime in seeing as I (now) know how difficult it can be diagnosing other people's bespoke work!
Best of luck, still miss the car, still want it back

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
Thanks for the info.
Depending on what the Garage says (1st July) it might be getting booted out of the fleet!
I might have to recommission one of the coupes!

Re: Thunderbird 2, The Green Machine & Turbo Coupes
I have a hunch based on Dusans comments further up. Get the garage to change the LPG switch to petrol only, let it warm up for ~15 minutes on petrol and then switch over.
See if that improves matters............
