Recent small service...

New cap, new fuel filter, rotor arm and new leads in the mail. I think my dirty filter might have clogged up the injectors so gave them a good snake oil treatment with two bottles of injection cleaner. Probably useless... If the leads don't sort my problem I will have to rip the injectors out and wash them with ultrasound. Also had some fibreglass-filler over the crack in the expansion tank. Let's see if it helps.

Gave it a good wash and vacuumed the interior too. Strange that a clean car feels so much better to drive.

It's looking great!

I find that with clean cars too. It must be a psychological thing but it is definitely true.

A newly cleaned car also makes you drive more cautiously.

Actually I thrash it as usual. :)

No but the last few days I've been driving it "with spirit" as I hope to solve the eventual problem of dirty injectors. But I think it's down to bad ignition leads really, so I'm looking forward to get them home and change them and the rotor arm.

Just a few hours ago I took the rear calipers off to clean the sliding pins and pistons up. Strangely enough they were already very free and came in and out quite smoothly so really puzzled about the binding brakes I have...

I got my new leads today and just fitted them. Very cheap but does the job at least for a while. And I must say they were the problem. The Vitesse flies again.

Thank you!
Yes I'm very pleased and as I sorted the leads, fuel filter and dizzy cap it goes really really well again. :)

I know it has been very quiet from me for a long time. It all started with me changing work really so I just didn't have time for any of the cars except driving. The winter came, and it was a real horror this time. The longest winter in modern time and only a few days ago spring officially came. So finally was able to start using the car again. The first thing that strikes is really how incredibly fast it is. With 12-12.5 psi and a full mongoose plus cold weather it just explodes leaving my Honda 190bhp vtec standing in the dust eating crumbs. This made me take the mature decision to lower the boost to about 11-11.5. The power is a lot more smooth now and it probably helps with the silly fuel consumption I have. (depending on my foot) It probably also is good for the gearbox which I am a bit scared of falling tp piecxes. The car is very close to 200k km which is 125k miles.

But I have been doing some small stuff. Last autumn I swapped my rear twin anti roll bars for a thicker one, 21mm. The car really didn't improve so I was a bit sceptical but I hoped it was the bushes that were shot. I did try poly bushes once and they really made a difference so I found these:

Rear ARB- bushes

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/21mm-ID-anti- ... 53f727e541
They really made a noticable difference. I presume the old D-bushes were totally shot but I really recommend these. A straight fit. Just remember to use the grease that comes with them.

Last season I had an issue with water leaks. First the waterpump gasket started to weep but I made the simple choice of trying some "radweld"-stuff (yes I know  ) and it sorted the problem for the time. Then it became obvious that the coolant water tank was totally busted so I ordered a Volvo tank and made that work. In the progress I changed thermostat and spark plugs, even though not really needed. So starting the season with everything pretty fresh in fuel line and ignition as I changed everything else in the autumn. And now with the new water tank I think the pressure in the system was too high for the old radweld-fix so that just exploded... The car now leaks water like a very old man. No leaks with the engine switched off, but immediately when it turns it starts to pour really. So a few days ago I ordered a new water pump and started sprying the bolts with rust oil. Hopefully the bolts will come out without trouble and hopefully (!) I have a long nice season of prestige motoring ahead!

Then I attacked the trouble I had with the return pipe for the fuel tank. I did fix the filler neck 2 years ago but never really sorted the return pipe so I always had a small leak when I topped up. So I got some water joints and tube:

It works great but I should have sealed the pipe better where the L-joint is. Maybe next year? Or in 2018... :)

I finally got around in changing the water pump today. And now it seems water tight! :D I did it in well under one hour which could be considered a miracle! Happy days!

I was amazed of how easy it was on the T-series. I read Richards tutorial but was really scared it would be a big job, but it was so smooth. A bit hard to reach one screw, but managed with a two hand grip. All in it was about 40 minutes.

Good afternoon from Greenwich! My 820 Sterling Coupe has the dreaded cracked expansion tank -may I ask which Volvo tank you used as a replacement?

All good wishes

Nigel

Hi Nigel,
I used the tank of a Volvo 850 1993.

You need to sort the lower waterpipe connection. The Rover is smaller (IIRC Rover 16mm and the Volvo joining pipe 19mm) and the top hose is also different. I used the original top hose even though it's not optimal but still possible. It's too short really. For the lower joint tube I eventually used an old ordinary water tap that I sawed off. (You can spot this in the pics) The Volvo tank has a groove in the rear for a bracket which must be made from scratch.

Just a word of advice, I used the Volvo cap but I believe it blew my waterpump gasket. It was already in a bad shape and I think the higher pressure cap killed it, so I had to change the water pump aswell. It is quite possible that the water tight expansion tank did this and not the cap, but since I changed the waterpump I have been using the original Rover cap as it fits.

Changing the water pump was the first job I did on my coupé and I followed the same instructions as well. Well done!

Thank you Henrik and Simon, shall be passing all this onto my splendid mechanic, Graham Edwards, who has looked after 'Edgar' for three of the five years I have owned him. For anyone near London & North Kent, I cannot recommend Graham highly enough, ex Sargeant and Collins, Rover & MG man through to the bones, now to be found in New Eltham on 020 8294 5946/07729 372 770.
