Simon's Vitesse Coupe

Post by SJG » Sat Aug 15, 2009 6:06 pm

Today i stripped down the paint from the lower part of the drivers side of the car.

It was intended that i would clean it back and repaint this sill as it was the better one - so i thought. I had thought that if i did this one it would allow the passenger side to be stripped and then welded.

Can this be repaired (Richard) bearing in mind our conversation at CITP?

There has been some welding done on the sill, but it is very thin metal and came away when i got the wire brush to it.

Please be honest, is the car ok or should i look for something else, can i still drive it?

Now for the horrible evidence...........

A little time, patience and of course the welder and it will be all fine again.

No point condeming the car on that bit of rot.

My late 93 coupe has similar corrosion, and will be repaired to as new again as soon as I finish another project.

Some where on here there are pics of sill repairs done by one of our infamous elders.

Fear not Simon, all is not lost.

Mal.

I've got some experience in old cars and - - - - rust... I think sometimes (from reading on UK forums, sorry guys...) you are too quick in thinking that scrapping is the only way. Looking at this it seems very easy indeed. If you have a MIG welder it's a couple of hours work. Optional, lend/lease a MIG.

Your car Simon was one of the first I found through Google *Rover 800* pic search (YES!) and I admired it from the start. Please don't look at the value compared to work here. Put a few £ into it so we can enjoy the lovely car you've got in the future.

ERGO: Don't even think about scrapping this beauty! or I'll be lurking down your back yard...

Compared to the inner sill welding needed on my Hillman Hunter years ago that looks like nothing.

What does the inside of the sill look like?

I've never seen one go there, it's usually underneath that goes.

Well thanks to everyone for putting my mind at rest. I had fears that you would say it was not viable. I have spent alot of time and money on the car and i would have been devastated if breaking the car was only way to go with my limited budget.

Thanks again.

From what i can see - through the holes (!!) it looks ok inside, some surface rust. Underneath (on this side at any rate) is fine, a little surface rust which i thought would be fine once treated and undersealed.

Eminently repairable. No worse than the one on my Sterling was (that was just underneath):

did the same thing on my coupe, the underside of the passenger sill was rotten and with a grinder and wire wheel took all the grot off and welded a full lenght patch on it ( 83"x3" steel strip cost all of £ 6.70  ) and was well werth(?) it. :D

I've just had the sill done on my Coupé. Nothing to worry about. I am in the process of fitting Hond Accord sill covers to my coupé to protect the underneath in future.

Does seem weird that only the coupés seem to rot in the sill area. I am convinced it is either water ingress from the very end, or the trims.

The Honda Sill covers protect the ends of the sill, and go inside the Mudflaps that it was recently found tha fitted the Coupé.

Will keep you updated with progress...

Yes i have been watching your thread with interest and look forward to hearing about the progress.

There were also some about painting the sills that i was looking at as well.

Damn mate, THAT is bad. Knock the original metal in, plate it up, and When I have done it to test, put the Honda Accord Sill covers on. You want to make sure your side trims are water tight, and the bungs are in properly.

I'm hoping mine will last ages now.

Is it true about the original sill profile being underneath (like on a saloon/hatch)?

Forgot about that before.

How bad did it look before stripping it Simon?
