Re: ricky's rover sterling
it is positively purring at the moment, need to fit the wings and a power steering pump (noisy) no water loss and no oil usage.. but spends most of its time parked up as money is at a premium, the little 307 diesel that i have for sale does near 50mpg, so that is the daily until it sells.. regards ricky

Re: ricky's rover sterling
took for the mot today.. passed no advisories... all brakes even and good numbers, emissions were the proverbial bitch, just lambda so must have a small leak in the exhaust somewhere, we couldn't find one though... so still just the wings to fit, and then a major polish up inside and out ready for POL.. I think I might have a vapour leak from the filler area... a question for some does a filler leak affect the running and or fuel consumption... I have a slight misfire now and then on idle, which clears when revved up.. regards ricky

Re: ricky's rover sterling
A fuel filler leak definitely effects consumption Ricky as the fuel can evaporate to atmosphere. My Sterling got down to about 20mpg regardless of driving style in July/August time a couple of years back because the fuel filler i had welded up sprang a leak - sort of! What happened was the welds went porous and were letting fumes/vapour our without actually showing a leak until the filler was inverted full of water. Then the other leak showed up as well - the filler cap seal! Made a new one from some 3mm neoprene sheet using a 1.5" wad punch to make the central hole then an old tuna tin as a guide (Blue Peter style!) for the outer edge and a sharp pair of scissors!thamestyres wrote:took for the mot today.. passed no advisories... all brakes even and good numbers, emissions were the proverbial bitch, just lambda so must have a small leak in the exhaust somewhere, we couldn't find one though... so still just the wings to fit, and then a major polish up inside and out ready for POL.. I've not known a filler leak to effect the running so far but that's not to say it won't. You may also have condensation in the fuel tank, especially if it's been stood a while. Have a read of my thread "Deprive a Tramp" for a cure :
http://www.rover800.info/forum/viewtopi ... =8&t=12876
Used it on several cars now and the results are fairly quick to see/feel and if that isn't the problem then it won't cause any harm either. For the price it's a cheap enough experiement and the chances are it will improve matters. Also helps economy a little in reducing the slight, almost imperceptible misfires at speed.

Re: ricky's rover sterling
If the filler is rotten Ricky, there's a very high chance you have got water in the tank, not just condensation but possibly rain water and more from washing the car. As discussed on the other thread, it doesn't take much to cause running/idle problems.

Re: ricky's rover sterling
took the sterling out for a run today, went to the walton breakfast club near walton bridge... like an idiot followed the satnav, so went the long way around!! the car was faultless, other than a puff of smoke on start up... still haven't done the fuel filler, but no rush.. the meeting last time i went was good but the rain really affected it today, bit of a washout, still enjoyed the drive.. regards ricky

Re: ricky's rover sterling
don't work with the memory seats properly, window on drivers side forgets itself quite often, passenger mirror drops a little bit at a time, so have to adjust it every so often... have got proper sterling ones from the donor engine car.. so hopefully that should sort it out... regards ricky

Re: ricky's rover sterling
Good luck with that! Got similar on my Sterling at the moment because i've got later non-memory mirror seats (seats have memory but not for mirrors) so the mirrors won't even work at all on mine! Need to swap the box from underneath the seat to regain mirror control and memory. Only window problem i have is a worn drivers window switch............
