Historic Police run (pic heavy)
Well as the last old traditional Traffic patrol garage closes in Hampton (TDT) the classic fleet had to be moved up to its new home at our training school at Hendon.
More and more buildings are disappearing and soon we will all be working out of industrial prefabs with counter services in the local Mcdonalds
Officers and civilain staff who had had dealings with the fleet over the years, were asked if they wanted to give up there time for a classic run to Hendon via Buckingham Palace, The Mall and New Scotland Yard. It took me about 2 seconds to say yes. (Hoping to pilot THE proper police car )
However due to a shortage of qualified job solo riders,I was allocated an ex SEG BMW R1100RS. Which is a sweet machine to ride.
Spot the 827
Nope thats not it
Ahhh!!! Whats that lurking in the shadows?
Inside the Land Rover
Hampton Traffic Garage the last of its kind. Such a shame
Stoking the Boiler in the Wolsley
Ohh yes. Does anyone hear the Emperors march music from the Empire Strikes Back when an 827 rolls slowely out of a garage? No? Oh must just be me
Inside the SD1
The moggy goes back upthe old workshop ramp for the last time. There was a time when all traffic Patrol bases had there own workshops, manned by Met police employed mechanics. Now its all contracted out to private firms. I will say no more !!
Getting ready for the off and the weather couldn't be better
A stop at the Wedding Cake for some splendid soldiers of the Queen to trot past. The K75 mounted skipper in front looks relaxed in the shot.
He won't be for long, as it wouldn't start again and he was left fuming like a Roman soldier from the Astrixs comic books
Looking back. We had the Wolsley behind us for most of the way which was a little worrying coming down the steep hill in Richmond Park. Apparently it weighs almost as much as the armour plated P6 and has Sturmey archer rim mouted brakes which are about as effictive as two blocks of butter rubbing on a record.
Parking up next to the Police Memorial in Horseguards.
My trusty steed for the day very easy to ride and comfy to boot. The R1100 next to it was one of those used to escort Diana's coffin.
Arriving at NSY
No one wanted to get TURFED out of the P6
LOVE this shot
Our Comish Berny takes a break from turning the handle to make the sign rotate and pops down to inspect the loveliness.
More 800 yummyness
I couldn't resist a quick piccie myself ....
The amount of interest these old workers generated was enormous and for most of the route there were people out with cameras, waving and smiling.
Most of the fleet made it to Hendon apart from the lovely Wolseley which broke down in Hampstead which was a real shame.
We are all glad that the Job has decided to keep these wonderful motor cars and bikes as they are part of our heitage and have formed us into what we are today.
I feel proud to have taken part.
Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

What a lovely set of pictures recording a great display of historic vehicles. What a pleasure it must have been to be involved. You have such a passion for this sort of thing and I am really pleased you take the time to share it.

Great pictures Kate I hope you managed to enjoy the day off from the trappings of city biking. A rare treat and one to which you are truly deserving.

Brilliant photos and i am so pleased that the police recognise the importance of these vehicles to their history and to the public. The enthusiasm of the serving officers does them credit, too - yourself included of course. Thanks for sharing

Re: Historic Police run (pic heavy)
What a brilliant day out. Wish I'd known so I could have gone and had a look along the route somewhere.
Great to see you in one of the pics. Shame you couldn't drive the best car there, but you do cut an extremely impressive figure in the motorcycle gear. Wonder where the Rover 800 club sticker came from?
Would be nice if a run like this was done every year - perhaps as part of the New Year's Day parade, or Lord Mayors Show, or something similar?

Excuse # 3,468 I bet you've heard them all Kate. I think the best policy that Government and the force could adopt is confiscation of said item and destroyed, I bet this would serve more purpose that a £60 fineTDHFastback wrote:Thanks guys for all your lovely comments. It really was a super day.
