MG owners club Northern national concours 2010

I don't really show my car very often and if truth be told i much prefer just driving and enjoying it myself. Showing is too much like hard work with all that cleaning and polishing. It can also be very tying waiting for the judges and you can miss so much of the show. Then there is the great british public who don't always treat other peoples cars with repect. There are upsides though you can get to meet like minded people and enjoy some really good chat with fellow entusiasts. I decided that i would enter my car into this years MG owners club northern national concours which was held at Pateley Bridge on the 8th August. I spent most of Saturday in between showers cleaning my car in preperation for the show.
I am pleased to say that when Sunday came the weather was fine and warm (most of the time). MG people particularly the B fraternity can be a strange bunch and very clicky. While driving down at a nice steady 70 i saw a train of MGB roadsters gaining on me in my rear view mirror. As the first one began to overtake and drew level i thought i would give a friendly how do wave. Not a glimmer . The second and subsequent cars the same. Not a glimmer of recognition their heads were fixed. I cant understand that and frankly i am glad i am not member of their group and wouldn't want to be. I am happy to speak to anyone and can't be bothered with all that pettiness just beacuse i don't drive an MGB. To me they are not car enthusiasts. Any way i digress. I knew that there would be some stiff competion in the show arena and so went not expecting to win a prize although its always nice to win. I was just happy to go and enjoy the day and meet a few people and socialise.
The judge arrived and looked over my car. There was one comment that he made to me when he had almost finished. He opened the doors looked inside and when he got to the back did the same and exclaimed "It's still 1987 in there". I thought that was a nice comment and it made me feel proud. I could now enjoy the rest of the show. The Harrogate MG club in its 25th year had put on a good show. There was a flying display,a motorcycle stunt show ,a silver band (Ripon i think) a kids entertainer and some men and women called Morris. There were some very nice cars on show and some not on show. As i returned to my car late afternoon i saw the judges talking to the guy next to my car and suspected he must have won a prize. A memeber of my party who had remained with the car while i was away waived me over and said that the judges has asked i take my car into the main arena as i had won a prize. I didn't know what prize though. The presentations took place and it was anounced that i had won 1st in class. A proud momment and i went to collect my glass trophy which was an MG Octogan etched with details of the event and class win.
The guy next to me had not been asked to take his car into the main arena but won 2nd place and a trophy for the furthest distance travelled (Kent). It was a great day and as i left the showground and began to enter the main road a tourist to Pateley Bridge and not part of the MG show was crossing the road and i heard him say in a highly delighted voice "WOW - LOOK AT THAT" as he pointed to my car and his face said it all, it was one of delight. Its moments like that that make all the hard work over the years worthwhile.
I have attached a few pictures for your delictation. There were many more vehicles on display but this is just a small sample.

First of all, well done on the 1st in class!!

Secondly, " i used to have one of those!" IIRC the reg was C760 XOW. The turbo let go at about 90 in 3rd with my foot hard down going up a long hard hill - particularly annoying as i'd just changed the oil!! Reckon it was the Tate & Lyles black syrup holding the turbo together!

Thirdly, i used to have a good friend who owned a "B" - hell of a nice bloke until you got him talking about "B's". He then became some weird kind of animal that concurs with your description of them being anti-social! Get him talking about anything else and he was human again!!

Lastly, keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Dave
