Obviously taking that little bit of what you said entirely out of context compared to the rest of the thread, but i was always under the impression it was either Fiat or Lancia that had a 4V/cyl arrangement circa 1900? I could well be wrong but i hope someone can tell us as i was trying to remember this fact for an entirely different reason the other day!

Wikipedia does say that the Merlin was 4V but doesn't confirm one way or the other with the Meteor but it's probably 4V too.

Completely agree with Rich on this one - it is a magnificent achievement. Utterly pointless and impractical, but was a superb machine. Hard to image what it must feel like to pilot such a device - all that torque and hardly any rpm must feel so strange. It's all about the noise though - nothing rumbles like one of those - and the Mt Everest effect. Do it just because it had to be done.
I am old enough to remember Dave Dodds Meteor engined "Beast" too, and saw it drive at Santa Pod a few times.
Taking the other tack, of what kind of engine swaps would be interesting if you are after something a bit more useful but still in keeping with the spirit of the base car - this one really floats my boat:

.. that is going to be such an interesting car when its done. Only a pity he didn't use a P5 Coupe to base it on really.

+ others.
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is.

Like the guys style Tim! I've often thought about a Triumph 2000/2500 Mk2 with a more modern straight 6 and contemporary autobox along the lines of a Nissan Laurel C32 2.4i engine/autobox (there is logic in my apparently lunatic thought pattern there!) or a Vauxhall Chevette with the Vauxhall Lo-blo turbo-diesel mated to a Manta 1.8 5 speed box or a Marina/Ital with an "O" series turbo-diesel or an "M" or "T" series.
That V8 in the P5B would take some beating for being a great combo though!

Just back to the SD1, I believe he is / has converted to fuel injection, and is planning to turbo it.
I think the big problem he's having is getting a gearbox to hold together with all that torque.
P5 looks great, those lexus engines are massive compared to the Rover. I once measured up a C27A for my P6, but it left about 1 inch each side of the heads, and changing plugs would have been a nightmare !

Looks like a great car. Would love to see it in action no matter if it is not as impressive as expected. At the end of the day hats off to whoever built it.
