Today was my first trip out into the desert, under the guidance of the UAE Offroaders Club. It makes a lot of sense to go with experienced off-roaders and traveling in convoy ensures mutual support and helps keep us all safe.
We started off from the main road near the airport and after that I have no idea where we went (I was too busy following the car in front!). The Jeep came through it reasonably intact with just one leaky shock absorber and a broken exhaust (a dodgy previous repair came apart). 3 hours or so of driving, great confidence building, a demonstration of the capabilities of my Jeep (generally higher than my own capabilities) all topped off with a very pleasant BBQ.
We all had a great time and are looking forward eagerly to the next one. Everyone involved was very welcoming and supportive and a great time was had by all.
Getting ready for the "off".
My passengers
First break and a bit of camel spotting
For a first timer this felt like a VERY steep drop! No doubt it was a breeze for the experienced drivers and the Jeep coped admirably, of course.
Not all obstacles were negotiated successfully - this bloke in a Jeep made a mess of it here.
But I wasn't the only one!
Roll on the next trip!
