guys, ages back someone posted a picture in cornwall of a guy with a solid red mk1 sterling saloon, on his property were rotting 800s, a mk1 twr identical to mine, a blue 820 and another sterling and another 800, anyway, the g/f n i were holidaying in the duchy last week, when this guy pulls out in front of me in his red sterling, gotta say its hanging apart, anyway he peeled off towards a villagey area that i know slightly well, so I'm going to find his place on google earth, i have tried before to find it, but now i have a better idea where he comes from. but couldn't believe it when a mk1 sterling saloon pulls out in front of you on your hols, just not expecting it.

Talking of Mk1s Matt, have you seen this 825 Sterling manual Mk1 on fleabay?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rover-Sterlin ... Sw5cRZIZVA

Looks a bit rough round the edges to say the least and when you said in your first post the guy "peeled off" i thought you were going to say "peeled off a wing or layer of rust"! Highly probable with that white one and if the red one you're on about is similar then quite likely with that as well!

By the way, as Bob Hoskins used to say in the 80s, "It's good to stalk!"  :D

What gets me about that Sterling is the fact the seller lists the interior as "in lovely condition"!! The headlining is stained and mouldy!!

Shame about the body work as i wouldn't mind a MK1 825 manual :D

I noticed that as well - calls into question his assessment of the rest of the car really.

That said, it's a Mk1 825 Sterling and to top all that, it's a manual. It would have been rare when it was new, now it's in hens dentist territory. I'm sure replacement wings could be sourced either using the rear bottom corner from a Mk2 wing to patch the existing wings or possibly bought from somewhere like Sterlingfixer in the USA. Whichever way it's done it would still be a restoration project for a while, even if that became a rolling-resto after the basics were done.

Matt and I had a good look over that car when we collect d another one he had.
IT IS A ROTTEN BAG OF CRAP

Nothing is salvageable. Nothing.

I would imagine the electrics may be useful though although the fusebox may need binning. Who wouldn't mind rear electric seats and a full trip computer in their Mk1. I do agree though that with that amount of corrosion visible the underneath would be ferric swiss cheese.

It's a shame it's that bad Jez - thinking about it if the headlining and sun visors have gone mouldy with damp, it doesn't bode well for any electronics or moving parts inside the car either - all the ECUs are probably water-logged or at the very least, damaged by damp and the seat mechanisms, window motors and so on will no doubt be rusted solid.

It is a shame. Trust me if it had been anywhere close to borderline I would have had it.
Even the interior is rotting.

Is it really that bad? Sills etc, the photos aren't that detailed.

Saves me a 230mile round trip i guess.

I've seen another Mk1 with mouldy headlining and sun visors Andy and most of the floorpan was also rotten, as were the sills, doors, wings etc. The wings, headlining and visors weren't as bad as that white ones though!

Are you really 115 miles from South London? :?

no don't do it anyone, the white 825 is rotted, the interior leather looks good, but it will be hard and crispy, its had it in the body, it is fubared like jez said.
