Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Limited (1998)

Post by Richard Moss » Sat Jul 28, 2018 8:07 pm

Bought for about GBP 2000 about 2 years ago, it now has 300,000 kilometers on the clock (30,000 km more than when I bought it) but has been well looked after. It has full BLACK leather interior (ouch in summer), 5.2L V8 (massive 220bhp :) ) and was built in Graz, Austria and it's technically a ZG, not a ZJ. I was thinking of naming it after one of the two most famous Austrians but neither Adolf or Sigmund sounded right. It's an odd colour - technically some sort of gold but changes from grey to bronze to "I don't know what" according to the light.

It had a permanent 4wd transfer box from new but that had a faulty viscous coupling so I changed is for a selectable one, giving me a 2wd option (and can now spin the rear wheels at junctions). I took the opportunity to replace the standard hit and miss, floppy transfer box selector with a neat, heavvty duty one like I have on the red ZJ. I've fitted the lift kit that was previously on my red GC and fitted new alloy wheels. I've fitted neat, but crap, clear headlights and a neat (and very useful) 2m x 2m roof awning. I fitted the snorkel, too, to try to provide it with a cooler air supply - but mainly because they look good.

Repairs so far include: fixing a few water leaks and replacing all hoses, thermostat and radiator. That was followed by having to replace the faulty cooling fan. American built models have a mechanical fan but ZGs get electrics. Last week the aircon compressor threw a leak and had to be swapped for a good used one.

Nice, can't beat a V8. How do you find it compared to your other one?

I keep looking at the WJ's but keep talking myself out of it.

There's definitely more torque than the 4L but it's also a noticeable bit heavier. The old, faulty 4WD transfer box was holding it back a bit because of the faulty viscous coupling. Overall it's better than the 4L in most respects but does use quite a bit more fuel

Quite a bit more than an already thirsty engine?

That doesn't sound good based on our prices over here. :D

On a good day I get about 18mpg from the V8 and low 20s from the 4L. Around own with aircon on it's a good bit less and more like 10mpg when off road

I can imagine. I stopped checking mine as it altered the way I drove which I didn't like.

My Explorer was worse though 12MPG to work and back. I'm sure I worked out at the time it was costing me £50 to do 100 miles!

I keep looking at 4x4s of all types but anything petrol is tricky to find at sensible mileage I'm finding.

It's not LPG that I have the issue with it's the lack of stations near here. It's still no different from the days of me having that 820.

I think a bad LPG conversion can put people off very quickly Richard. Done properly, it makes a lot of sense - £1.40/L for Super Unleaded Vs 70p/L for LPG - no-brainer in my book!

Those are average prices i've paid recently round my neck of the woods, they very across the country though. Even when my Cherokee was only doing 11mpg on LPG it was still affordable to run (about 47.9p/L at the time) but i got that sorted out and the best i had was 24mpg on gas from it on a run.
Equivalent to getting about 54mpg from petrol taking the price difference into account!
Cheers,
Dave

I know that I haven't been on here for a loooooooong time but I still have this. It's currently parked up with a couple of faults (slow oil leaks from the steering and repeated check engine lights) but I've still got it.

More another time

It doesn't have one of those silly emissions timers on it i suppose? They count down from 100k miles (160k km) and 10 years simultaneously and the first to reach zero triggers an EML to get the Lambda sensor(s) renewed and the light put out.
Cheers,
Dave

I doubt it - it's currently at 331,000km. I think it's a faulty sensor but it's currently refusing to talk to the code scanner.
