Well the camping trip went well - even my first "pop out" was a useful learning experience. Before the smut monsters get carried away, a pop out is when the tyre gets pushed inwards off the wheel rim and deflates. It "just" requires the vehicle to be jacked up and the use of an heavy duty electric compressor to reinflate it. I also dislodged a front bumpstop but otherwise the Jeep performed well.

We only did about 65miles of driving but it took about 4-5 hours in total and achieved just under 8mpg into the bargain. I'll get around to posting pics soon.

What size of compressor are we talking?

Something that's come into my mind. I guess I'll work out a list of stuff after I've been in a couple of weeks.

I'll keep that in mind and see what else I need to add to the shopping list.

A few more updates:

I managed to get most of the front polybushes fitted last weekend - a bit of a job as you have to drill out the old rubber bushes and reuse the metal sleeves (that means burning out the remaining bits of rubber with a blowtorch!). Still, job done and the front end feels more secure now, and is quieter than with the old, worn out bushes. Of course, there's something else now - a worn balljoint on the track bar (which controls the axle's left/right movement) so that's another trip to the parts shop to come later. Whilst I had the front end in bits, I fitted new brake discs and pads and these make a significant difference - I think that the old pads may have been a bit glazed.

On the last off-road trip I managed to hit a rock and damage the rim of one of the alloy wheels. I didn't see this until I was doing the bushes, so happy co-incidence there! Ironically, the damage wasn't done whilst really off-road but whilst driving down an access track which had a few random lumps of limestone scattered around.

Being an alloy wheel I'm not comfortable with the idea of bashing it back into shape, so I took the opportunity to buy a good second hand set of 4 of these "GT" alloys and that means that I'll swap my tyres over and use on of the original Jeep alloys as the spare. The picture isn't mine, it's just to show the type of wheel.

That's a good dent.

We're going to be working on the front end of Joes in the next few days. His rattles like mad.

My new one rides better than the black one. So I might look into new bushes for that if I keep it. Oddly it didn't seem bad before but the new one is definitely better.

Thought anymore on new tyres yet?

I've got 255/70 x 15" Cooper Cobra GTs on there now (they will match the "new" GT wheels nicely!). I'm going to stick with standard sizes for now, but I suspect that I may have worn them down a bit by next winter so will look to be upgrading to 31" diameter tyres at that time in all probability.

You're in danger of getting a bit personal there.

The Jeep sprung a nasty oil leak from the area of the oil filter yesterday. There are two main causes of this on the 4L - oil seals on the filter housing or a split on the oil pressure sender. It turned out that I had both!

Luckily my favourite shop had both in stock. The sender cost £20 and the oil seals were £3 for the set of 3. The seals are only causing a slow weep so fitting them has been delayed until another day but the oil pressure sender was practically gushing so that's been done. I also invested in the required tools: 27mm spanner for the sender and Torx T60 for the housing.

Leak gone, going off road tomorrow and friday.

Have to keep an eye out for that.

More dune bashing? I'm off out Sunday for the first time proper.

Have fun - try not to break it (or sink it! )

It'll be fine.

Worst case I'll use the black one for bits, that's my plan at the minute or sell it. Not keeping both I've decided.

Just clicked over to 240,000km last night - it will soon be a quarter of a million, the way I'm going.

I just liked this view at my local petrol station last night - crap shot (mobile phone) but liked the view

Tonight I got my "new" wheels fitted tonight (15" x 9" GTs) - a recent purchase from a member of the UAE Offroaders group. They give a slightly wider stance than the standard wheels, without looking silly. I'm very pleased with them (again, crap mobile piccie).

Mine ticked over 173K last night on the way to work.

Oddly it runs and feels much better than the black one which has done 60K less.

Your wheels are very glam.
