I wonder, what could it be?

Landrover, Range Rover, Jeep or whatever - off-road or not, this is the one.

I keep hummimg and haa-ing about a Cherokee XJ so this thread is quite useful for me. As a "veteran" Jeep owner Chris, is there anything i should particularly look for?

Another thing that's caught my eye is this import 1991 Nissan Pathfinder currently on the bay :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201025049960? ... 1423.l2649

Not wildly keen on the diseasel engine but it's auto and looks to have a reasonable amount of luxury. Saw one (this one maybe?) in the flesh at Kings Lynn Car Auctions a few years back, looks a nice beast but if i'm going to have a 4x4 i'm wondering if it should be a "proper" 4x4.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks for the links Rich, had a good read of the shorter one and a reasonably good read of the l-o-n-g thread. For the time being i'm going to shelve any plans for a Cherokee XJ for sure and probably any 4x4 based vehicle.
Without going in to details i'm waiting for an investigative hospital procedure - 1st appt landed on my doormat a week too late, second was cancelled by the hospital due to the lorry breaking down (the procedure is done at my local hospital in the back of a lorry specifically equipped) and the fact they didn't have a bed for me overnight so hoping for 3rd time lucky!
If it shows what i, my vet and the consultant suspect it is then lifting heavy weights/strenuous activity will be off the menu for some time at the very least!

Shame as i've always fancied an XJ or failing that a similar sort of 4x4. Hopefully once i've had this test they can sort me out and i'll be able to think again about one.
Cheers,
Dave

Only just seen this.

I know you've said it's not on the cards now but thought I'd chuck a reply up. Over the last few years I've had several Jeeps and I've come to the conclusion that unless you need the off road or towing ability of them they're crap. :D

The steering on them is shocking and not very car like. You do get use to it though.

Plus side is they're cheap and generally bullet proof. I got rid of both of the last ones I had in 2012. I've since had a Ford Explorer which was a far better car to drive day to day but ultimately not very reliable. So I scrapped that too. :D

As a tool they're great though I wouldn't replace any half decent car with one for a daily driver personally. I think you'd soon fall out with it. Plus it'll cost a fortune to get wherever you're going anyway.

Thanks Chris, very useful input!
To be honest, the amount of time i'd actually need the 4x4 ability would be minimal, although we're a bit behind the times here in rural Suffolk we have tarmac on most of the roads - just! If they don't bother repairing them sometime soon though, that may well change!
As for the towing capability, well it would be nice but again, once in a blue moon. There was a halfway tidy-looking Disco V8i (3.9) on ebay (still on with a few hours to run as i type) for a reasonably cheap price so i got an insurance quote.
That was enough to put me off, if nothing else had!

So given eveything else in my life, unless i win the lottery i won't be getting a 4x4 at all. If i do win the lottery then cost of insurance won't be a problem :D and neither will maintaining it.
Cheers,
Dave

Chris's assessment of the Jeep XJ Cherokee and ZJ Grand Cherokee is pretty good. I wouldn't want to use either of mine as regular family transport, except for short distance use. However, I've just had a 3 1/2 desert driving session in the manual XJ Cherokee and it easily matched or outpaced much newer and more expensive machinery.

The later WJ Grand Cherokee is a nice cruiser, very comfortable, reasonably competent offroad and should be easy enough to look after in the UK.

Trust me! The only one i really like out of them is the XJ - the looks of the later one are just too "soft" IMHO, even if it is a more capable vehicle.

The main problem with looking after it would be that the parts, torques etc are generally bigger/heavier than the 800 which i have been struggling with lately. Until i know what's going on with the old ticker i daren't over-do things, just in case. My dog might be clever but he wouldn't be able to ring 999 if the worst happened.

Thought i'd revisit this thread as i've actually had a 95 Cherokee 4.0 HO Limited on LPG for about 4 months now. In between when i last posted and now i've gained a very useful little tool that is basically an electric impact driver that you can preset the torque on between 80-340Nm in 10Nm steps. Also the hospital never did come up with an appt but certain events proved the point.

Anyway, the bottom line was that there was a Cherokee on the bay a few months back. It was badly listed and had a few minor faults and the seller hadn't even washed it before taking the photos. Eventually won the auction and went to collect it the following day.

A few months on and i've sorted the minor faults and it's currently having the O/S sill glued back together with the electric glue gun at the MoT station so will come back to me with a years MoT on it.

Here's the thread i've started on it with a few pics and a bit more of what i've done to it :

Enjoy!
