Jeeping at Holymoorside 05 02 2012

Post by CHR15E » Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:18 am

Me, Joe and couple of other mates went off roading proper for the first time on Sunday. Here's some photos and vids of us and some of the others there on the day.

Mine before setting off.

Joe's getting LPG on the way.

Just arrived.

And after.

We had a few mishaps through stupidty.

Not serious but my front number plate came off through one the large puddles. Got it back though. Joe pulled of a wheel arch trim.

Worst of all though after having a go at a bit of a track and thinking I needed more speed I did this.

This is the drivers sill a little bent.

Image

And the passenger one. Seem it was a bit rough anyway. Bit of welding required now.

Image

Moved the front bumper and lost a foglight as well.

I have a pile of videos as well but rather than link them all please feel free to look through them. Be aware though there is the odd bit of swearing in them.

It was much more fun than I expected, a lot of the fun is the mess you get into and getting out of it. Would have been nice to have got more pics but we were too busy driving.

Looks like good fun and very different from the off-road experience here! In our case speed/momentum is often the issue because we're climbing 45 degree slopes with limited traction and lots of drag from the sand.

You may need to invest in a set of what the Americans call "sliders" or "rock sliders" to protect your sills (rocker panels in Yank speak). www.jeepforum.com will show you some pictures.

Looking at the red vhevile (Terrano?) I would have thought that he'd have problems with lack of clearance using wheels and tyres that big.

Yeah, thinking of something like that. May also beef the sill up itself. Not sure till I look at it.

My black one has some on but not sure how strong they are.

He did have trouble with the rear wheels catching the arches in tricky bits.

Might be worth investigating sticker numberplates (a bit like E-Type Jags often have) to prevent further 'inadvertent detaching'...
One or two 800s...

That is what a lot people do. That or fit them to roof racks totally out the way.

Yeah, it was totally my fault though. Trying something I shouldn't have. Live and learn.

One bonus of sand - you may get stuck but it rarely does any damage.

It was very tight on a lot of this so the risk of damage is high.

It was very good fun.

We could have gone again today but Joe has a similar problem with his. Though more a bearing noise. His had his transfer case in bits today and can't see anything.

We suspect but don't know for sure that it's the front axle.
