Re: Don't you just love progress?
Suggestion time Chris (forgive me if they are obvious)
5Ghz band not 2.4Ghz?
Beamforming turned on?
Dual band functionality turned on?
I have not done a NAS with mine so I have no idea what is involved setting up the router to allow access.

That's not too bad for the boondocks, Dave. I wonder what kind of speeds Iceman and Maverick enjoy on the other side of the 12ft fence near your house?

Mach 3 with their pants on fire!
Apologies to Kelly McGillis and Top Gun for the blatant plagiarisation! NOT!!!!
I know they have their own system over there so your guess is as good as mine but i would say they probably make Dusans system look slow. That said, that might be shared by all of them though..........

3 - Yes.
4 - Easy job to just plug in the drive, the pain is sorting out the tangle of wires behind the TV.

Re: Don't you just love progress?
Been playing more, think I need to relocate it as I've put where I have the main Virgin router and the WIFI signal outside is very poor.
I do like the app setup though, nice and easy to use and see what's what.
Hard drive is working fine across all my TVs as well.
Just need to see if I can improve the signal. Failing that I may go back to how I had things setup and use this for the Chromecast audios I use so they can all be on the same network.

Re: Don't you just love progress?
Beamforming should be on by default but can be switched off if you tick the box for backwards compatibility with older network devices.
Good to know NAS is easy
Hmm, how many other WiFi signals are there? Channel interference?
Otherwise access points are the only way forwards as you've mentioned.

I think after a fair bit of head scratching I've come up with an explanation.Alucard7002 wrote:Beamforming should be on by default but can be switched off if you tick the box for backwards compatibility with older network devices.

I set the 5G to AC only and neither my phone(Nexus 4) or tablet(Nexus 7 2013) can see the connection. So I then checked the specs of both and they don't support it.
My other halfs Galaxy S6 does though so I'll try that later for completeness.
So at the minute I'm not sure what to do. I am looking to swap my phone though not the tablets anytime soon. We have 3 all the same and I'm not forking out for them.
So for the time being at least I'll go back to the setup as it was and run this router for music across the house/yards.
Dave, here's some proper info on it.

Re: Don't you just love progress?
Thanks Chris - new name for an old (ish) concept - that's how Trackers work but with a slight jiggling of the process to enable direction finding instead of device finding.
All makes sense now, not sure if the one i'm getting has beamforming but that wasn't a primary consideration when i bought it.

Re: Don't you just love progress?
My new router landed today and i wasted the rest of the day trying to get it set up!
What a waste of time that was! Amazon are collecting it tomorrow....................
.....................it turns out that......................
................................................................... Sky have embedded the username and password for broadband access within the firmware of their router and it uses some kind of rolling-code algorithm to encrypt it each time it connects to the net and the username and password can only be deciphered by downloading some packet-tracing software from a site that Firefox rejected as having dangerous downloads, insecure sonnections and umpteen other security problems!
Bottom line i wasn't comfortable compromising my PC with the dodgy software so after numerous calls to Sky and TP-Link i'm no further forward and stuck with the el-cheapo, unreliable router that Sky provide and want £70 to replace!
Seriously thinking about changing my ISP as a result. I probably won't but thinking about it...............
