The joke is that they even got on a degree course. Its getting to the point when we employ people we actively seek those who have had life experience rather than 27 GNVQs and a fancy degree.

Degrees seem to be handed out like confetti these days. Going back about 20 years, one of the guys i was working with was doing Electrical & Electronic Engineering BTEC 4 or 5 (can't remember which now) which is what i did in my apprenticeship. He was in his 4th year and struggling. Our boss asked me if i got 5 minutes to sit down with Gary and go through the problems.

I was shocked. Very shocked. He was in his final year and stuck on the problems i'd done in the second year, with much deeper stuff on the 3rd and 4th years. He had a "syllabus textbook" outlining everything that would be studied in this, the final year of what was to become a degree level qualification. I flicked through to make sure they hadn't just shifted this particular part from the 2nd to 4th years (in fairness it was a particularly tricky area but i can't think what it was just now) but no, everything else was the same as i'd studied in my 2nd year.

Talk about dumbing down! I voiced my concerns to the boss and he quipped that it should be easy for me to remember it all as i'd done it in my second year but as i pointed out, first it was 10 years previous and second, more importantly, i'd done two more years of studying after that!

Don't get me wrong, what Gary was studying was more than enough for what he'd ever need in that place and most others, he'd only really need more if he went into research and/or development but even then, 99% of what he needed had already been covered.

Extrapolating that decline i'm surprised they can even justify further education these days!

One of the big problems nowadays is that they are no longer students they are customers. Institutions need to take a look at the content relevance and how they deliver it, it is not just the students.
