Recommend me a smartphone please

Had my brother try the forum while here yesterday and his did the same as mine. I'm just going to get him to check it as his house and see if it's the same.

Been reading this with a fair bit of interest as i'm due an upgrade soon and most of the upgrades available are smartphones of one sort or another. Of course the one i really want (really, really want, zig-a-zig-aaah!) is available but i have to pay a hefty "top-up" premium to get it.

My first thought when i saw what you were after from a smartphone was "why not get a dongle and a laptop?". Reading through the thread i realised that wouldn't be practical but also just how much smartphones can do!

This has opened my eyes to a lot of things and linking some knowledge i have of computers to what i now know about smartphones, it sounds as if you have a hitch with your cookies. Either your security level is too high to allow the cookies to function for this site on your phone or possibly you have your phone set to delete cookies after visiting the site.

This is only a suggestion and could well not be the answer, it could be down to a signal problem. Something i've found helps with the signal sometimes is re-booting the device (i use a dongle for my internet access) as it then connects you to the cell site as a "new user" and gives you more priority. Sounds strange but apparently is true, or so i was told some years back by a techno-bod at Virgin.

Sometimes i've also had a strange problem when i've ventured into Cambridge. The problem occurs when i get home - can't get a decent signal, send or receive texts or make calls. Again, re-booting the phone solved the problem.

Don't know if you're getting s similar thing when you're at work but could be worth a try!

Works fine with my Sony Ericsson X10 (which I'm making this post with).

He's tried it as his now and it's the same, works for a few clicks then freezes and says it can't connect. I might try getting in touch with 3 directly and see if they have any advice.

I was using a netbook and dongle but can't risk that now. The phone has impressed me. So many things that it does easily. Found an internet radio app now and alsorts on that.

Just this issue to sort, I'm assuming it must be the network with my brothers doing the same.

Thought I'd update this.

Still using the same phone, HTC Wildifire S on 3.

I have literally had no other issues anywhere else on the internet other than here at the time. After later experimenting with tethering which would allow me to view the forum with no problem via a laptop that points to it being the phone?

However now that we've moved to the new forum setup it seems fine on the few tests I've done with it.

I don't use a smartphone, but I do have a 3 mi-fi dongle, basically it sets up a wifi hotspot on it's own and you can connect several devices through it. Just like the tethering on the phone, but no phone required.

Works great for me as I prefer to use a laptop / netbook, plus the kids can use their ipods at the same time.

I would prefer a laptop but when I'm supposed to be working the phone is more discreet.

Just as an aside, one thing I've noticed since the forum upgrade is that new posts remain 'unread' for as long as you don't actually read them. Used to be really bloody irritating that logging on would assume you'd read everything, so that one thing alone has made the upgrade worth it for me.

I quite like that, too. Of course, from the "Board Index" page you can select "Mark All Forums as Read" if you want.
