All sounds good - hopefully the fault will show up on the tester! :D

been playing on the car today... the mixture is now down to 4.3% until I take the breather of the intake, then its 3.8% so next step oil change, have cleared all adaptions, cleaned the nearly new plugs (well years old but only a couple of k miles).. can within the diagnostics change the timing and idle speed, very marginal though.. while in the ecu there is no fault codes, but the lambda is giving no readings and says "not ok" in live data... almost as if its not working... but why no fault code, and on a closed loop system why is it not sorting itself out... so will try the oil change and then the lambda sensor, which has not done many miles either... also the cranksensor says "not ok" as well but it runs as it should... regards ricky

done mot this morning, failed it on emissions... new lambda sensor later and it passed easily, my car is jan 86, so must be below 4.5%.. finished up 3.7%, bearing in mind this system is for a 2 litre 16v, and mine is a 2 litre 8v.. seems slightly smoother as well, got home this evening and taxed it.. so on the rd again, needs polishing and then for sale again.. the system also says lambda is ok and so is the crank, seems a bit weird but all good... regards ricky

Good news on the MoT Rick! :D

I suspect if you drive it round for a week or two now it's all legal again that those emissions will come down further as the MEMS re-learns with the new Lambda.
Even if it doesn't, you can still have a couple of weeks fun in it! :D

the guys in work thought it was funny that I failed the mot first time around... but the way I thought about it, its being sold and with my name on it, it needs to be right.. took it out today to get lunch that clutch is heavy, I have got a pedal shaped impression on the ball of my foot.... but its nice to be going again.. just need to do some major polishing and valeting to it now... regards ricky

Don't worry Rick - you can take the juice when their cars fail the MoT first time round as well! Lambdas can fail at any time though, i actually had one fail during the emissions test on my coupé, started off ok at something like 0.1% and suddenly started climbing and the tester pulled the probe at 9.6% to protect his machine.

Dave

was out meeting some fellow car friends a couple of weeks ago, someone approached me about the car and implied that they might know someone (as they do).. but admiring the car as well, while taking some photo's and video's it cut out.... and would not restart.. turns out the cambelt jumped a few teeth, it had worn down the teeth I assume with age to about 1mm x 1mm.. luckily no damage and all running again.. the moral is check for wear regularly, especially when its getting older.. regards ricky

I forgot to say I took the mg out on new years day to a couple of shows and the clutch started screaming when the pedal was pressed, so gave the impression the thrust bearing is breaking up... well finally decided to look into the thrust bearing on the mg... as luck would have it the original company "super clutch" has gone out of business... woopee doo..... have spent all night with paperwork from super clutch trying to locate or even identify a replacement for it, ap racing to the rescue at double the price of anyone else, so will keep searching for some other brands and maybe a trip to a bearing shop for good measure.. regards ricky

Are there any ID marks on the bearing Rick? If so try :

https://simplybearings.co.uk/

Got my air-con clutch bearing from them, one of the few that listed it and it landed next day for a very reasonable price too. Still not fitted it mind, but i've got it!

I have not stripped the gearbox off yet dave was just thinking to organise and get a price to do it, should really get a camera into the starter hole and check the thrust bearing visually first but am quite sure it is going to be that, the car drove from harltey wintney to Brooklands and back home with no problems except the noise and a little bit of grabbing at parking speeds.. regards ricky

Certainly sounds like the thrust bearing from your description Rick, do you remember what the thrust bearing/clutch was that went in it last time?

If you're going to pay someone to do it then it might be just as easy to get them to remove the box to inspect the clutch parts and go from there.

Just a thought, it's a cable clutch on that i take it with automatic cable adjustment? It's not the adjuster playing up and jumping out of adjustment is it? I had that on something, think that was a Maestro but it was a 1.3L - similar box and/or clutch though although probably a bit more feeble than what's in yours.

As a total aside, i'm very impressed with those tyres! Very quiet, grip well wet or dry, comfortable to drive on, thanks again! :D

Dave

glad they are ok dave.... the maestro has a "super clutch" fitted to it which is rated at 450lbft, it is a twin 7.5 inch clutch with a modified flywheel to take the clutch and a heavy duty thrust bearing, hence the issue, super clutch appear to have gone out of business, so am having to try and find a new supplier, I have the dimensions so have to compare with other brands, will probably have to strip it out first to compare with the new one on the purchase day... regards ricky

I've not heard of "Super Clutch" Rick but these people may be able to help with a thrust bearing :

http://www.automotive-bearings.co.uk/bearings.html

I think that's the right site, i lost all my bookmarks recently so am rebuilding them from memory now. If you can't find it on there let me know and i'll have another go. :D

I have found a new supplier of the clutch in bridgewater of all places, so will probably order the bearing while the money from the sterling is burning a hole in my pocket, then just have to get it sorted.. regards ricky
