Don't be surprised if the lacquer starts to peel after a while, but for now that looks new. This is one of my pet hates on modern cars, plastic lenses, they all suffer from it, some worse than others. If it gets too bad it can even be an mot failure. Used to have to do my son's MG ZT every 3 months or so, admittedly it didn't take the 4 hours it took the first time but hell give me glass anyday or at least headlamps that don't try to reach the A post pillar.

That's a nice improvement! How long will the UV lacquer last?

No idea. If it doesn't last I'll take it back... £120 + vat for both. Wilcox quoted £250 for one new headlight unit... I was going to have a go myself but would just end up with a sore back and arms ;-)

Not sure if they're ripping you off or giving you an exceptionally good price on the headlamps :

Daresay they used a DA (Dual Action) Polisher to do it, they can be picked up quite cheaply so with the right pads on them you could save yourself some £££.

I'm with Dave though - glass is much easier to look after!
Cheers,
Dave

Basically how my brother did it on my other halfs Astra.

It was a fair bit of work tbh, I'd definitely not recommend doing it by hand.

Making the job worse, obviously it's best to have the units removed which on a lot of newer stuff can be a nightmare in itself.

I think all in as long as it lasts a few years £120 isn't shocking.

I've done a few by hand - my -type for example. It's not a job for a warm day and the results are nowhere near as good as on those 75 headlights. They look good and the price seems fair.

you can buy kits now that supposedly make it really easy to do, i am not sure of all the brands but "meguiars" definetly do a kit, have not yet tried it myself but has been recommended to me so no doubt i will try it at some time..i have tried it with the g3 and polisher/buffer though and it does take a bit of time to get the right result... regards ricky

I'm now wondering if I should spend £60 on a wooden gear knob.

Actually it's quite obvious that I shouldn't... :|

Yes, I have a wood knob (oo-er) and handbrake grip, though I haven't fitted them yet. Meanwhile...

Popped in this morning, they order the silencer and they say it'll be here in an hour and a half. So I pop back later.

Is this the original one? Not bad if so, it's lasted 10 years. Anyway, time to cut it off...

There we go...

Need to cut a bit more off...

Nearly done...

Just need to tweak the position a bit...
Image

Finally - and no pictures of this bit - once it's on the ground turns out it's hanging a bit low so you can clearly see the pipes poking down. Not their fault, it's the box. So they whip it off, hacksaw an inch and a half off the pipes, refit (snapping a new clamp in the process) and here we go, job's a good'un.

My first MOT with this. Advisories on a tyre and lower bushes... and that's it!

Things to get done before we move to Cornwall - a couple of tyres at my favourite exhaust and tyre place (see above) and gearbox oil change. A new rear screen with working heating elements would be nice but they are like rocking horse sh...oes.

Well I got the gearbox oil changed way back, the old stuff looked pretty rank.

Now we're in Cornwall it seems to rain more and it's making it's way into the car somewhere, mostly in the back and coming out from under the rear pillar trims.

But anyhow, this morning the car didn't start. AA man who said nice things about 75s said it was the fuel pump. Bugger. So towed to the garage to wait for them to find time to fix it... so the Mrs will be taking the bus to work.
