Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
During the major maintenance i forgot one thing; the front suspension. Now, everything (dampers, springs, bearings etc) is done.
After this, the Rover Vanden Plas stood like new.
Another small cosmetic job done.
The rear speaker covers looked tatty.
Cleaned and de-greased and i coated the covers with bumper coating to make them black and give an durable result!
After, for example, washing i noticed that the luggage compartment was a bit damp in places. I replaced the seals behind the rear light units.
Behind the left rear light there was a small rust spot (i knew this already) that i attended to. Cleaned of the rust, zinc coating and ik used a paint marker to make it look good. After that the new gasket left and right.
Roadtrip time! First holiday for me with my Rover SD1 Vanden Plas.
Thursday night i drove up the boat for with destination Harwich.
He did not feel sick luckily. ;P
Friday morning arrived in UK and the drive to the hotel started. Driving on the left side is not difficult to get used to.
After a three hour trip i gave the Rover a drink again to fill the tank to the brim.
The Rover was quite dirty when i arrived.
A wash and then i waited for friends to arrive.
Saturday morning the drive to POL began.
Someone took nice pics of arriving cars.

An epic Rover 827 Si Fastback.
My Rover Vanden Plas got many likes during the day!
Sunday the Rover 75 / ZT Club organized a event at Gaydon Motor Museum.

After another great day i left at about 3 o clock in the afternoon to catch the night boot. My Rover drove so smooooth a real continent eater! All the work on it has had a good result. 700 km's were easy!
When i was near my home i had a control from the Police. Everything was in order of course and they loved the Rover Vanden Plas!
It was a great trip!

Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
After all the work on the Rover Vanden Plas and the nice trip through England it was time to pamper him.
First i snowfoamed the Rover, brushed the seems and brushed out the wheel arches and wheels. Also the bottom was foamed. After this i hosed of the Rover with water and washed him with wax removing soap to remove wax and old dirt.
After this i used a clay-bar and soapy water to remove the last contaminates from the entire body work. After this i again cleaned the entire car with wax removing soap. I hosed of the car with water and dried the bodywork. Now i applied a fresh coat of wax. Prior to this all i polished the chrome.

Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
Before i cleaned the Rover Vanden Plas i attended to another detail. The door grips are chromed but the inner part where you put your finger, should be black but turned grey and tatty during the years.
Masking and primer.
Then i used matt black.
After the big clean i attended to another small job. The doors have the black strip on them to prevent other doors hitting the paintwork. On that black strip is chrome tape. The old chrome tape was worn of so i ordered new tape. I de-greased the area in question, cut of the appropriate length and sticked it on. This is how it arrived. Complete with everything.
It is a fresh look now again!
The car looks better and better i think!

Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
Last weekend i was lucky because the weather was awesome when i took my SD1 on a trip to visit friends.
Driving through tunnels at highway makes the V8 growl like a animal. Awesome!
The following week it was MOT time.
After a minor repair on the rear brakes the MOT was a fact!
Looks pretty nice also under here with all the new parts!

Great pictures Marc, I really enjoyed the story of your trip to POL., The car looks like new in those pictures.
After a long run like that, did you work out the average fuel consumption, I would be interested to know.

Hey thanks! Glad you liked it.
I calculated 1 liter of fuel used every 7,5 kilometers. The traffic was not bad in the UK but not fluently.

Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
I'm trying to convert that to how we say it over here Marc. That would give about 33.75km per gallon (4.545454L) which is about 21mpg (miles per gallon) - ouch!
Have you got Stromberg or SU carbs on it, does it have FASD or manual choke and what oil do you use in the carb dashpots?
Also what timing are you running?

Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
I don't think 21 mpg for a v8 automatic is bad. Driving from Switzerland to The Netherlands one time it did 1 liter per 9 kms. So it is down to maybe more nervous driving.
Stromberg carbs.
No manual choke.
I use 10w40 oil in de carbs.
(classic oil in the engine it self as recommended)
It runs like a champ.

Re: 1982 Rover 3500 V8 Vanden Plas automatic.
On the face of it, 21mpg isn't that bad but i was getting 28mpg out of the various different SD1 V8s i had and have set up a few Range-Rovers so they give 21+mpg as well.
You may have a balance problem between the carbs, a pinhole in the diaphragms or a lazy FASD, incorrect ignition timing or blocked breathers. What's your oil pressure reading at normal driving speeds?
I would also change the dashpot oil for ATF instead of 10W40 engine oil, it's a tip i picked up well over 30 years ago and has always improved things for me.

Thanks for the listing.
I can imagine that after all those years and the recent maintenance some fine tuning is needed.
The breathers were all installed new last year during the maintenance.
will keep you posted.
