A few weeks ago i wanted to go to a Youngtimer event with my SD1 Vanden Plas. However, my old Rover noticed some clouds in the sky and decided it wanted to stay dry. It lost power and sputtered to a holt. The Dutch road assistance could not help me and brought my SD1 to a garage of a mate of mine.

To be sure we replaced more than one possible cause.
New fuel pump.
New ignition barrel.
New modern ignition.
Image
Image
It brought me home and the trust in the car steadily came back.
Image

In the weekend i took the car for a long trip to visit a mate of mine. It feels gutsy, runs nice and it does not conk out on the hard shoulder anymore. :) Result!
Image
However, when we wanted to take the old barge for a cruise down the boulevard the startermotor would not disconnect anymore. I did try some tricks but nothing worked so i called the road assistance. He also could not help me and we decided to let it be brought to the garage close to my home.

The guys loved the old Rover!

New or rebuild starter motor and check the wiring will make it better i am sure.

Sorry to hear you're having troubles with the SD1 Marc - i would suggest a reconditioned starter motor, by the time you've stripped it, bought the components to refurbish it yourself and put it back together it would almost certainly be cheaper to buy a ready-made, reconditioned unit that also comes with a guarantee. :D

It has been a while but it has a reason haha.
In the last update you saw that my SD1 whas recovered because the starter motor did not disconnect.

17-august-2018.
The Vanden Plas has been repaired after and drove fine. The problem was a short that kept connecting the starter motor preventing it from disengaging. So, the starter motor was not broken and fine i still decided to have it rebuilt just to be sure.
This is how it came back after:
Image
The first proper drive was to the oldtimer festival in Zandvoort racetrack.
Image
Image
Image
My SD1 regained my confidence. The second test was a drive to friends in Belgium during a warm day. Even through Belgiums horrible traffic (i hope i don't offend anybody) my Rover stayed as ''cool as a cucumber''. ;)
Image
Also the ride back went well.
Like Bob Ross always said when he painted a tree next to another one ''lets give this guy a little friend.....''. I bought my Rover Vanden Plas a 1:18 scale little friend. ;) :)
Image
Image

In November, my Swiss friend came to visit (i bought my SD1 from him) and he was very pleased to see that this car was so much fresher and more healthy than before.
Image

In march 2019 we took out the Vanden Plas for the first drive of the year. My girlfriend and me were lucky with the weather. :)
Image

In noticed that the coolant level was not stabile at some times. It was down to the fact that, even when the radiator was rebuilt, a leak was there. Near the hose connection. Without costs, the overhaul company repaired the leak.
Image
Also a flange on top of the engine leaked cooland. All is now repaired.
Because the Lucas temperature gauge is not accurate and i want to know that is happening in the engine room we installed a additional temperature gauge. Just to have a extra insight.
Image
These cooling system repairs were done during the time my girlfriend and me were to POL with my 827 Vitesse. When we got back after the weekend, we collected my Vanden Plas and headed home. My girlfriend drove the Rover Vanden Plas home. :)
Image
Back home (parked outside briefly before they were stored inside).
Image
Because i now live together with my girlfriend not only my Rover 827 Vitesse needed some new accomodation, also my Rover Vanden Plas needed a new place to sleep. It is a closed of car park.
Image

In the spring of 2019 my girlfriend and me had a photshoot with both my Rover cars.
Image
Even drone pictures. :)
Image

In may of 2019 my Vanden Plas was revalued for the insurrance. Higher than before so nice to know it is well covered. :) Just to be sure.
Image

23rd of June 2019 one of the biggest British out door car events of the year was at hand. I decided to take my Vanden Plas but before this i had to give it it's annual clean. 22nd of june i filled it up and added a cleaner to the fuel. After that the cleaning began. Snow foam, wash, clay bar, wash again, dry it of and then fresh wax. I realy love to clean or work on the cars. It is a perfect way to meet the new neigbours. All very friendly and interesting and interested. :)
After six hours this was the result.
Image
Image
In the evening before the event, i checked all the fluids and all was fine! :D Perfect.
The drive went great and even so this is a almost 40(!) year old car, it is still a car that you drive to fast accidenticly. Not 100 Mph without knowing of course but it is still a swift car! When i arrived i met up with a friend who just saved this silver Rover 827 Vitesse. Very friendly guy and nice to see that his car is saved.

Another Rover joined and you can realy see the family bond.

Shiny!

After a great day it was time to head home. Because of the lovely weather the Vanden Plas arrived clean.

In the hot week of 22nd of july 2019 my girlfriend and me went on holiday with the Rover Vanden Plas. We did not went very far and stayed in The Netherlands, But even though it was still a almost three hour drive. It did it very well. Even when it was this hot outside the car stayed cool and was very eager to roar down the motorway. What a lovely motor car.
Image
Ones we arrived i started to take out the luggage. Always amazing wat fits in the large boot! :)
Image
To protect the big old Rover from the sun, we brought the cover.
Image
And with lovely suroundings one must take pictures. :)

Because my Vanden Plas proved itself i got more enthusiastic about making it that little bit more pretty. One thing that realy started to bother me was the wood in the interior. Especially the wood on the doors. It was deteriorated after almost 4 decades in the sun. At first i was planning to order new pannels but LHD wood panels seem to be hard to find. Anyway, i had to do something. After discussing it with my friend i decided to start. I took out the wood and started to remove the old clear laquer. Not with sanding but with a thin knife.
This is how it looked.
Image
This is how they looked after the clear laquer was removed.
Image
Image
After degreasing and about 6 to 7 layers of 2K clear coat this is how they looked.
Image
Much better!
Image
Image
Image
As you can see, not the work of a profesional but pretty good for an amature with a spray can. ;)
Because the door panels were open, i took the oportunity to spray wax inside the doors to help prevent rust. I also removed the ancient tape and installed fresh tape to make sure the doors are water tight again! :)

The drivers seat rear has been fastenend now. :)

Amazed at the work on those woods panels! Got some for my 827 to gently sand down to remove the old lacquer then spray new and hope for similar results. ;) :D

Totally agree with Dave, those wood trims really is great looking. Are the SD1 trims equally thick in the laquer as the 800 ones? I sanded one of those and the laquer was very thick and soft, almost like a resin. Really hard work.

@ Scoobyh123: Thanks! Yes I was pleasantly surprised about the result but you must know it is really not the result of a professional restorer. The veneer in some places was really bad. In some places the clear coat was gone making way for the sun to dry out the veneer. But my goal was to give the warm colour back and preserve it with a durable result. The new clear coat hydrates the veneer and sort of smoothed it out. But again, it is not as smooth as it left the factory.

Ah! Nice, I am curious how yours will end up! :) I was advised to use 2K clear coat because this dries up very hard and tough. That is what you want to seal off the old wood. ;)

@ Manalishi: Thank you. :) I must admit that I don't know. As said above in the comment to Dave, the old lacquer was very bad and even falling of in some places on the wood panels. The lacquer that fell of was very brittle so maybe it is harder than the lacquer on the Rover 800's.

When I think about it there is a difference between mk1 and mk2 wood from the 800 too. The mk1 is as you describe very brittle and often cracked, however the mk2 is more like the feel of plastic. It’s not wrong to assume that the SD1 and mk1 (mine is a Mk1a) are similar in choice of material.

The SD1s were indeed an excellent car Chris, i'd love another but finding one in good condition in the UK is firstly a lottery and secondly, if you do, you'd need a lottery win to buy it!
Once upon a time you couldn't give them away though!

Like a lot of cars I guess.

He had 3, all V8s.

He then put a Rover V8 in a Transit. He has a lot to answer for in what I look for in a car. :D
