That's good news Marc! I was surprised when i read your fitting report you hadn't done anything (you normally do!) so thinking it was a lapse of your usual good judgement, felt i'd better say something!
Cheers,
Dave

New big update on my SD1:
Something that bothered me since i got the Rover 3500 was the interior. Not ugly but not realy nice either....

Top of the rear backrest was torn:
Image
on the separate side of the rear backrest, there was a tear, the seatbelt was not the correct colour (because the old one broke it was replaced by a brown one).
Image
Front seatbelt receivers knobs turned pink:
Image
In the past i painted the dashboard (would not do that again) and because of this it was to much glossy and a couple of shades to light and the wood did not look good anymore:
Image
Instrument binacle cover looked tired:
Image
Headlining started to deteriorate quickly:
Image
Speaker covers were painted black to cover the faded colour of the old ones:
Image
On the outside, the chrome/rubber strips had cracked rubber:
Image

A lot of things are quite easy to source for an SD1 nowadays but the interior is quite a challenge. A few years ago when i was in England with the SD1, a fellow Dutch Rover Enthusiast came to me and told me he had a SD1 that was to far gone to save, with the same interior as mine but in lovely condition. I had to think about 2 seconds and said yes of course!! After a while i went over to remove the interior from his gold SD1.
This is the donor:

Working:
Image
Image

The gentleman has a collection of SD1's and one of which is this one, also gold, that drove in Saoedi Arabia. With bullit holes. I took the chrome strips that go below the side windows:
Image
Image
It took two drives to take all the stuf over. Now i could begin to make one nice interior out of two interiors:
Image
Awesome that i now have a nice intstrument cover:
Image
When i stored the parts in the garage of the 827 Vitesse, it looked like a barn find haha
Image
First i started on the outside by removing the chrome strips:
Image
Choose the best strips that i had an started cleaning (the inside that you slide over the door:
Image
Because you might damage paint i painted the inside with zinc spray:
Image
To be followed by clear cavity wax to prevent rust:
Image
Job done:
Image
When i was working on the doors i saw that behind the door cards it looked a bit shabby. Old torn plastic hold on by ducttape and dirt:
Image
Cleaned everything, sprayed in the electric plugs and sprayed cavity wax on the inside of the doors:
Image
Then i closed of the doors with fresh new plastic:
Image
Also the left door of course:
Image
And closed as wel with fresh plastic:
Image
Then further with the interior. I painted the d-frame covers beige so they would match the rest of the interior better:
Image
Clear coat:
Image

In a previous post i told that i sanded and clear coated the wood panels. It was better than it was before but not realy great to be honest. With the new sourced interior came much nicer wood panels. Now did it properly and sanded them down and had them clear coated in the spray booth at work:
Sanding (wood of the doors):
Image
Wood of the dashboard:
Image
After the first four layers in the spray booth i sanded them down again to improve the result:
Image
Then another four layers of clear coat gave a very nice result:
Image
Image

Then me and a mate of mine started to work on a big job. Replace the old dashboard with the much nicer ''new'' one. First removed the old dashboard (the green circle shows the plate that was sanded and painted black so it would look nice behind the vent grids):
Image
The new dashboard needed only minor adjustments because it was from a newer type:
Image
We also removed the old headliner and after the correct cloth was ordered and delivered we re lined the headliner card:
Image
The inside of the sliding roof is also lined so removed it al to attatch the cloth:
Image
Before the sliding roof and headlining was installed, i sprayed cavity wax in all the seems of the roof.
All looking nice again!:
Image
Image
New rear backrest side without tear, champange coloured seatbelt and nice looking wood:
Image
''New'' seatbelt receivers with red buttons:
Image
Nice beige speaker covers installed:
Image
Looking nice again:
Image
Image
Dashboard looks pretty fresh i think:
Image
Image

My Vanden Plas looks better and better. Especially when you look at older pictures (2016 when it was still in Switzerland):

Gave the old Rover a wash. Looks so smart with the lovely fog lights:

Absolutely awesome Marc! Amazing transformation on a car that already looked very nice to a car that (somehow!) looked even better! :D

Another little job tackled. A while ago i painted the air filter housing matt black. Looked nice but i later found out it should have a more clossy finish. I wanted to correct all this and also remove the dent from the air filter (you see on earlier pictures). I have some dent removal skills thanks to my current job so that was quite handy! :)

Removing the dent:

Primer:

Image
Then semi gloss black:

Image
Then in the spray booth for the clear coat. Looks nice allready!
Image
Image
Also ordered new air filters so all is well:

Assembly:

Before i placed all the components back i cleaned the engine further:

My Rover 3500 received an upgrade. Because the auto choke was causing trouble and the Stromberg also were tired i decided to install the Edelbrock carburetor. I love the look of the old engine bay but even though originallity is nice, reliability is nicer!
Image
So, out with the old.......
Image
And in with the new:
Image
American Iron:
Image
It runs not perfect yet but very well indeed!
The other day i welded the exhaust because there was a small hole:

Rochester or Carter carbs were fitted as OE kit in the USA version of the engine Marc and Edelbrock and Holley were popular aftermarket replacements so you can argue it's original. :P

It was the English being scared of using the artistically crafted buckets from the USA to administer petrol that made them use firstly the SU HS6 (a pair of) then the HIF44 and later the Strombergs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V8_engine#215

A bit more there that you probably already know but at least you now have proof for the arguments in the pub that you can't put an American carb on an English engine! :P

Dave

I've never been a fan of Strombergs - a Triumph-inspired, less reliable version of SUs in my opinion.
A good condition SU is a fine piece of kit but American carbs work well on American engines
