Beginning to be like that all year round here lately.

Not sure if people have always been this way and I've ignored it or maybe I'm just getting old(er) and more grumpy? :D

There's a good reason it got its name!  :D

Perhaps we're both getting older and more grumpy Chris or maybe the general standard of driving is going downhill...........

If you two are old and crumpy. :P Remember i am still wet behind the ears (26 yo) and drive very calmly in traffic. ;) Most people drive oke but after a day of driving you tend to forget the hundreds of people who were oke and remember those 5 who were not.
Traffic just becomes more full and people don't enjoy it nowadays and it is all about the destination and not the journey. You ar both right that it is not changing for the better in traffic.

Round my neck of the woods i tend to remember the 5 who drove ok, not that i often get anywhere near 5, usually just 1 or 2 as the rest were horrendous! :D

I'm 35, though my other half says I'm going on 50 with all the moaning I do about people's driving.

Perhaps that's why i moan so much about others driving, i'm nearly (but not quite) twice Marcs age. Still the better side of 50 though! :D

35 is still pretty young i agree. ;) You are as old as you feel Dave. ;) :)
i know what you mean Dave. Especially in rush hour there are more plonkers on the road. I am lucky i don't have to drive in rush hour but only drive my cars when i am not in hurry. If i would be driving in rush hour i would probably feel the same. ;)

In 2017 my SD1 Vanden Plas was mostly stationary because i wanted to save for the technical maintenance. In the mean time i did some cosmetic jobs. One of which was painting the dashboard. Maybe the old primer was reacting with the heat of the sun or something.
Image
Image
I took apart parts of the dash.
Image
Image
De-greased the das and used plastic primer.
Image
Four coats of colour.
Image
Image
Image
Some coats of clear varnish to improve the durability.
Image
Image
Wood back in
Image
Image
Off course there is a difference in colour because the rest of the interior has to be cleaned and the paint is new in comparison with the 35 year old interior. It is also more shiny but after the clean i use cockpit spray on the rest of the interior. If the result is not as durable as hoped i will let the dashboard be wrapped or something. But for now it looks fresh again.

On the last pics you can see that the black cover of the instruments does not fit wel at all and that it has the wrong colour. It is a part that causes many problems because they buckle, warp or change colour. A new one is no longer available for a left hand drive so i did my best. At first i tried to get a proper shape in the part and some strength. I used weights to straighten it out a bit and to glue the steel strip to the inside. I also made a plastic piece to give the corner some strength. I used a DVD box and cut out some plastic. I heated it with the help of a friend to make i shape that i needed and glued it in place.
Image
Image
First i glued te sky to the part again prior to paint. Primer first:

Image
Then i used white to make sure the beige would pop more.
Image
Image
Colour:
Image
Also clear varnish to hopefully give a durable result.
Image
Image
I still had to make adjustments after this to make it fit. It is a 100 times better than before but it could be better. Maybe use 3-D printer to make a new one. For now it is fine.

September 2017
During the storage awaiting technical maintenance i did a fun job as wel. During filling up the petrol tank i noticed that the Vanden Plas leaked fuel. To be sure i wanted a good replacement tank and filler pipe. A good tank and pipe were found and before putting it in the Rover i treated it to some TLC.

This is how it arrived. Not bad but some surface rust.
Image
Image
Gently sanded the surface rust of.
Image
De-greased it and used rust remedy.
Image
After a day i removed the exes and sprayed zinc spray to give a protective coating.Image
Image
Image
After this the tank was already properly protected but i wanted another coat and choose to use stone chip spray in the grey colour. The pipe on the tank i used black stone chip spray and satin black.
Image
Image
I used grey stone chip spray for the tank itself because original it was steel silver so grey comes close. :)
Image
Image
The filler pipe got the same treatment. Cleaned surface rust, rust remedy, zinc spray, black stone chip spray and satin black.
Image
Image
Image
The rubber ring was cleaned and treated with vaseline.

Thanks Dave!

In oktober and november me and my friend agreed that my Vanden Plas would get the maintenance it deserved. It is quite a list but it is quite an old motorcar. And i worked hard for it on the ship so...
This was the original list.
New radiator.
New cooling fan.
New viscous clutch
New waterpump
New belts
New gaskets and seals for the engine
New crankshaft seals
Rebuild transmission.
New rubbers in front suspension.
New rubbers in rear suspension.
New rear shocks.
Install new fuel tank.
New stainless steel rear silencer.
New tail lights.
New air hoses under the bonnet.
New cooling fluid.
New engine oil.
New diff oil.
New engine mounting rubbers.
New gearbox mounting rubbers.

Rimmer Bros parts came in.

Prior to the pick up i treated the rubbers and tires to a new coat of creme.

Mid oktober i let my Rover Vanden Plas be picked up and brought to a friend of mine who will do the maintenance. I could have drove the Rover Vanden Plas but the seals of the transmission were leaking badly and so was the engine. I don't want any oil on the road so i choose the safe way and asked professionals to transport my Rover.
The tow truck pulled the Vanden Plas out of the underground car park.Image

First sun in about a year!

Arrived safely. Good job by the tow service.

November 2017

My Rover SD1 Vanden Plas is in fairly good health again! As said the credit of the work has to go to a friend (who i paid of course). He also made some pictures.

This has been done:
1 Automatic gearbox rebuild. Even though the car has low miles (110.000 kms) i wanted to be sure it was oke.
Image
Cleaned and rebuild!
Image
2 New sensor that communicates with your starter motor and reverse lights.
No rust anywhere!
Image
3 Rebuild the radiator to be sure. The old one was a bit tired.
Image
4 New engine mounting rubbers.
Engine in the lift to replace the mounting rubbers.
Image
5 New gearbox mounting rubbers.
6 New cooling fan.
7 New viscous coupling.
8 New waterpump.
New waterpump and viscous coupling in the Rover.
Image
Rebuild radiator and new cooling fan installed.
Image
9 New belts.
10 New rocker cover seals.
11 New inlate manifold gasket.
12 New gasket distribution chain cover (front of engine)
13 New crankshaft seal front and back.
An old crankshaft seal.
Image

Then i wanted to take it for a short drive to visit my brother. As you saw a lot of attention has been spend on a lot of systems and parts but not the alternator and by Murphy's law.......yeah.
Image
*-) (:P) 8-)
33 New alternator.
Image

After a wash and pampering.
Image
Image
Image
New parts do make it look a lot better but the black parts like the air filter box have to be repainted.
Image
Image
Dash looks pretty good in the sun.
Image
Image
Image
Image
On my way back home from visiting a friend a made a nice pic in the shopping mal car park at night / late evening.
Image

I adjusted the cable on the transmission to make it even better in shifting.

Almost winter time so time for hibernation prep.
Filled up the tank, drove the Rover up to temperature and a proper wash.Image

Like i said in the previous message; some parts in the engine bay needed TLC. I took out almost everything that is black and started.

Image
Radiator protector. A bit shabby with surface rust and lack of shine.
Image
Battery mounting bracket. Clear story.
Image
Image
Airfilter box dirty and shabby.
Image
Cold/hot air regulator shabby.
Image
The parts that had some rust on it i brushed them, sanded them, de-greased them and put rust remedy on them.
Image
Image
After a day i removed the exes and sprayed them with zinc spray.
Image
Primer:
Image
Image
Air filter holders.
Image
Battery bracket.
Image
Image
Cold/hot air regulator.
Image
The radiator protector i did not use primer but stone chip spray to give it protection.
Image
After this i coated every part with satin black.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Now i also took the opportunity to install a sticker that was missing.Image
Image
Radiator protector looks nice again.
Image
Looks pretty good i think.
Image
Image

Another nice touch for the interior.
