Rover 100 Knightsbridge (1996)

Post by Richard Moss » Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:23 am

Recently purchased from Mal, this is intended to be my eldest daughter's car once she has learned to drive next year/early 2014. I know it's a while off but it does give me time to sort a few little issues.

The cars is a 1996 Rover 100 Knightsbridge - 3 door with 1100cc of 8valve K series engine, 5 speed box and just 22,700 miles on the clock from new (backed up by some service history). Overall it's in pretty good nick - the engine is smooth and very quiet, the front and rear arches are excellent apart from a small area on the right rear, brakes and steering seems OK but the clutch feels a bit sticky (probably the cable). There is no rot in the boot corners, doors or wings and the underside is generally good with just a couple of small holes in the floors. The radiator looks good, the fan cuts in at the right time and the temp stays under 1/2. The interior is pretty good apart from failed stitching on the driver's seat base and a few headliner issues (well, it IS a Rover). It should make an excellent project and equally good first car.

Jobs to do include:
Service - including precautionary cambelt change - possibly water pump, too
Fix a few bits of trim: driver's seat base, headlining and door card (door card already done)
Repair small areas of rust on the right rear arch, rear valance, floor and scuttle panel.
Fit new stereo (the display on this one seems to have failed)
Fix nearside central locking
Replace rear tyres - legal but old and mismatched.
Change heater blower (it vibrates like mad - probably bearings)
Change front and rear screen seals
Rustproof!!!!! It IS a Metro and is currently quiet good so I'd like it to stay that way.
Precautionary water hose changes
Plus some other stuff that I've forgotten!

I forgot to upload these before - these repairs were done some time back now. Rot cut out, localised repairs to the inner wing, part of an arch repair let in and the repair repainted with Halfords aerosols (quite a good match)

Looking good Rich. There is something nice about these little Rover 100s.

Looks nice, like the 800's, so cheap right now but so much upwards potential for the right ones, look at the original 80's MG's and even the ultra scarce MG Turbo's.

I should have said that the floors and sills are all sorted now but I may have to get the finishing off done by someone else due to the fact that I'm thousands of miles away. Hannah will be 17 next month so will be taking driving lessons ASAP and then wants to use the car as her daily driver. My one concern is the lack of power steering - OK for blokes but I'm not sure about girlies.......

On those profile tyre's there is no need for power steering Richard, she'll be fine.

Rover Metro/100s are fine as long as the tyre pressures are correct and the tread is deep. After all, thousands of feeble grannies drove them, didn't they?

Decent tyres, deep tread and 35 psi all round, not my words, but the words of an ex Rover Service Manager. Do those three things and any fully grown woman can drive it!

An unassisted car is great to learn in.

I wasn't being serious about the PAS (or lack of) although the idea of retro-fitting EPAS has some appeal.

The car is finally off to a local, trusted garage on monday for a new timing belt, water pump, full service, Hydragas pump up and MOT etc. Fingers crossed...... After that the headlining will be tidied up.

Then if my Hannah's driving test goes well it will be pressed into service in a few weeks. Of course, that leave the issue of "new driver" insurance with no NCB. Currently that appears to be about £1300 for the first year for comprehensive with breakdown cover.

have you tried these http://www.onlyyoungdrivers.co.uk/ we had a very good quote when my son started off. They are based in Leeds and Aviva is the underwriter.

Also Pass Plus will bring down any quote so is worth doing and gives the the young driver a little bit more tuition and confidence.

Thanks - but that site indicates that they want drivers aged 18+ and with a proven track record. We'll give them a call, though, and see what they say.

The 'black box in the car' stuff (I think run by Aviva) seems to be the way forward now with the young 'uns .....................

Give it a few more years and they will want us all to have them fitted, or pay double what we pay now due to the scamming scumbags on our roads

There should be some updated photos winging their way to me via the www in the next few days so they'll be put up here,
