i find my car runs quieter and is slightly better on power and economy when i fill up with v power or tesco momentum, both appear much better than bp and esso.. when monies tight it gets what it gets.. regards ricky

Funnily enough I've juust come back from a trip to Portsmouth in my 200 Bubble diesel donkey - 503 miles at, shall we say, 69.9mph officer ..... and still got 58 mpg.

I'm convinced Rover missed a big trick by not putting the L series into the 800 ...... O-series block, and more torque/power (when intercooled) than a Nasp T16.

Yep - Basically the same engine (bottom end, anyway) that's been in everything from the MGB through to the Vitesse Turbo ..... but diesel varients started in Monties/Sherpas and carried through to the MGZR Diesel, where a reliable 140+bhp & 200+ft/lb is normal.

That would be a good long term idea to put one in an 800.

Since getting my KV6 Sterling in 2010 I've been keeping a record of how much fuel I've used and how much I've spent (sad I know)

From 21.02.2010 to 25.02.2012

I've used 1299.17 litres of petrol
Spent £1690.93p

Which averages to 19p a mile just for fuel
My sort of journeys range from long haul up to Newcastle. To and from work (mainly motorway 100 miles per day) and pottering around town Church, shopping, visiting friends etc.

Average miles per gallon for this period has worked out at

.....31 MPG which I don't think is to bad for what is supposed to be a big thirsty executive car. Susies 2009 MX5 2.0 litre sportec is averaging 35mpg and thats a little two seater.

I'm quite impressed with the Sterling.

You said how much fuel you had used and how much it had cost...

But you never said how many miles you had done ????????????????

At 19 pence a mile... I make it...

8,895 miles x 0.19p = £1690.05p

which means at 0.19p a mile on a 60Litre /13 Gallon Tank approx £80 fill up
you are getting 400 miles to a tank...
On all my V6 sterlings i ever got 300 miles to a tank

I do approx 50 miles Town / 100 miles Motorway each week.

Doh
Sorry about that bit of a blond moment
Milage was 8361 miles. (maths is not my strong point)

When the Maths teaches at school asked if( P x Y) is six to the value seven then what is the sum total of A., I'd be sitting there thinking "Who cares"

Wish I'd listend to what my dad said.

Been keeping an eye on my MPG figures over the past few weeks.

Filled up on Friday after 2 weeks of urban driving (few jaunts up the A419 but mostly around town) - 274.6 miles used 50.42 litres of fuel, giving me a rough figure of about 24.8mpg.

Filled up again last night after a drive up to Burnley and back which was all motorway - 392.3 miles used 50.12 litres gives another rough figure of 35.6mpg. I thought that was an impressive difference in figures, even more so because I didn't think I would do the journey on one tank of petrol!

On a run, i normally get anything up to 43mpg out of the Sterling. Oddly enough, it's best at between 80-90mph which is when i achieved the 43mpg. I did the same trip 2 days before at 70-80mph and only just nudged 40mpg.
If i trundle around at 50-70, i generally get anywhere between 31-36mpg but round town i'm lucky to see 26mpg. General running about i tend to get 27-32mpg.

Not had a chance to check the coupe out yet, mainly because the fuel filler has collapsed into a pile of iron-oxide, soon to be replaced with stainless steel though so testing might happen!
As for the Dogmobile, generally about 27mpg for most of my running about which includes 2 x 1 mile trips to walk the dog each day. On a long run (collecting the coupe from Bristol), it averaged 24.8mpg for the round trip. Bear in mind the combined weight of the coupe and trailer was a tad over 2T, i think that's pretty good considering it weighs in at about 1470kg on it's own.
Cheers,
Dave

Following on from this, I have some data from the 820 auto Coupe.

Remarkably similar driving conditions to the journeys undertaken on the above post, makes for an interesting (in my view) comparison.

Urban driving: manual saloon 24.8mpg, coupe automatic 19.2mpg

Motorway driving: manual saloon 35.6mpg, coupe automatic 29.8mpg

Quite a difference between cars! For what is essentially the same engine (2.0 T series) I guess it's a combination of extra weight in the coupe and the automatic vs. manual difference?

There was a similar anomoly with the old SD1s Dan. The most economical SD1 round town was the 3.5 V8 auto and the thirstiest, the 2.0 auto. The compariosn with the SD1 might seem irrelevant but it is in fact to do with power to weight ratio and also the transmission. Also the 2.0 engine is almost the same between the two cars, certainly the bottom end. Yes, it's been refined and updated in the T series but the O series in the SD1 is basically the same engine, albeit with only 8 valves.

Having said all that, is your torque converter locking up correctly on the open road in your 820i coupe? You should feel something similar to an extra gear-change about 50-55mph under acceleration (not flooring it, just normal) and it should drop out again about 45-50mph on a traililng throttle, assuming the box on the FWD use of the 4HP22 is set up similar to the RWD applications of the same.
Cheers,
Dave

Yeah it feels like it is working correctly, I've had some autobox troubles recently but these figures were obtained before the problems began. Does feel like 'an extra gear', but it feels like it kicks in anything from 45mph+.

Just one of those things, I mean it's not that great a difference in the grand scheme of things. We don't drive these cars for the fuel economy anyway! :D

Yesterday I did a run to Burnley and back - total trip of 384 miles exactly from pump to pump. 52 litres exactly (whole numbers all round - wierd, right?!) makes 33.5mpg. Not bad for a 2.5 KV6!

The cost of petrol for the trip was £65.90. Train ticket would have been £171. So for the price of one return ticket I can do the journey twice and still have change for a cheeky McDonalds (or several). I know what I'd rather do!

Looks like I'm getting fat this week.
