And now for something completely different...

In the last year I've been busy with a few things.

One of those is playing pit crew chief for a drag racing team.

We compete in MSA events in the Pro ET class.

For those unfamiliar with drag racing this class is a "handicap" style.

For qualifying you choose your "dial in" time - the time you think your car will run.

Closest to the dial in = highest spot on the leaderboards. Your position on the leaderboard determines your opponent for the eliminations.

Eliminations are run with a handicap. The lights are timed so that according to your dial in times both competitors should cross the finish line at the same time.

Enough on boring rules, the vehicle is technically a Toyota Supra...

It has:
  • 2JZ-GTE 3l straight six with a single turbo conversion ~600hp (should see 700+ once we finalise the tuning)
    Standalone EMU ECU
Spaceframe Hauser race chassis ~950kg fully dressed
Toyota Supra hybrid autobox with an aftermarket controller
And a whole host of other bits.

Now for the photos and the odd video including the ever so practical and stylish tow vehicle/campervan!

Current best time is 10.59 @ 130mph but with a bad 60' time of 1.619

We are having issues with holding the car on the starting line, the brakes are not up to the task of hloding the back while trying to build boost for a good launch.

It SHOULD be running in the mid 9's with a wheels up launch and trapping close to 145mph

I'll keep you all posted if you're interested :-)

I (and Stevee G) know someone who'll be VERY interested and will undoubtedly have the answers and the spare parts to make this a winning project.

Good luck.

Was it you Dusan that was telling me about the technique of forcing the gearbox to simultaneously select first and reverse to act as a mechanical lock so boost could be built prior to launch?

It would work but put enormous strain on certain transmission components before launch, not to mention the prop, diff, wheel bearings etc when reverse is released.
Assuming the room is there to do it, bigger brakes might be a better option?
Cheers,
Dave

a small shot of nitrous will get you boost very quickly ;)

I will be back up there soon with the 827.. not going for the same as my last one, but a nice low 14's would be good....

still the supra is looking good :)

Yes that was me, that's called a transbrake by the drag racing boys.

Works very well on the old Powerglide gearboxes but it is a little riskier on the modern stuff!

It boils the fluid but it is one of the sure fire ways to build boost/hold RPM without needing antilag/2 step controls.

It also preloads all of the driveline so that while the car launches at full power it isn't a complete shock load (think of the crown and pinion in the differential, under load they are meshed tightly ready to go, if they are at rest there is a risk you smash the teeth together thanks to the slight backlash in the system)

Bigger brakes would be great but as you've said there is no room, they are already 4 piston calipers on floating 10" discs! Pretty beefy!

Nitrous is on the cards for next season. Boost it up to around 1000hp with a 300 shot.

I assume that being an auto the gears are planetary so when locked out the stresses are shared among 3 or four gears so can easily handle the stresses.

I go to New York dragway at Melbourne (Yorkshire) quite regular, only spectating.

It was good to see the "run what you brung" guys doing there stuff. A quite standard looking mk 3 Escort(apart from Cossie engine) up against an Audi R8, the Audi came second
