Yeah you might be right about the year 96; - I've forgotten alot of that stuff now. I used to read aronline very regularly but not these days. Interesting note about the Honda engines as well - no wonder I see alot of the old 80's Hondas where I live; - and Toyotas and the like come to mention it! As for Fiat, well this year coincidently I have been off to both the States in January, when the weather was at its worst to see my Uncle and to Italy for a week break. At the Washington Auto Show I saw a few Fiat based Dodge cars, and in Italy I have seen Lancia's based on the Chrysler 300 - which itself is based on the ancient Merc E-class chassis when Chrysler/Daimler had their tie-up in the 90's. Weird how things sort of transgress like that.

The motor industry is very incestuous. Something scary is that the new Fiat 500 X-over is actually a Jeep Wrangler with a crossmember removed and a restyle. Or to put it another way, the Wrangelr gets an extra cross-member for additional off-road stability.
A Lancia based on the Chrylser 300C is worrying though - i remember the Lancia Thema 8.32 from the late 80s basied on the GM Cavalier/Saab 9000/Fiat Croma floorpan/bodyshell/platform but with a 3.0 V8, 32 valve Ferrari engine in it. Great engine but what a waste putting it in that body/chassis!

A lot of the "old skool" Hondas, Toyotas, Nissan/Datsuns are enjoying a bit of a "rennaissance" at the moment as many people looking for something cheap, reliable and economic to run and maintain are finding those virtues you describe.
I often wonder though if Honda had siamesed a pair of Ballade/213 engines together to create a 2670cc V8 how different it might be to the 827 we have. Of course they could have used the larger 1493cc unit from the Mk2 Ballade/Civic and made a 3.0 V8 or gone for the 1.6 16v Concerto/Civic/Rover 2/416 unit and made a 32v V8 of 3180cc (3.2 litre) which could probably have kicked out about 250-260bhp. :D

Dave

On the subject of what ifs.

Rover should have made a 4L twin turbo TV8. It should have been good for about 450bhp.

Or a 24v version of the PE166 SD1 six

Or they could have made more of the V64V from the 6R4 rally car. Capable of 400bhp naturally aspirated in race tune, it was "given" to Jaguar (or TWR) who turbocharged it and powered the world's fasted road car with it....

...or maybe they could have just made the K series properly. An engine design that was the envy of the world. A manufacturing process that certainly wasn't.

Ah. Missed opportunities....
Tom.

The biggest missed opportunity out of those Tom is the K-Series. If they'd made it better and researched it more so that it was a reliable unit then they could indeed have had a world beater.
Being modular it was easy to change sizes and configuration, it was almost an automotive Lego engine in terms of the possible flexibility of cylinder numbers/configuration. Straight 4 in the morning, V8 in the afternoon.

Dave

In simple terms, economy and emissions. Bit more complicated than that but thems the basics.
