New project?

Post by Manalishi » Sun Sep 02, 2018 3:42 pm

So, Gunnar and I went for a little spin today to look at an interesting project. Its a 1989 827 Vitesse, manual. Could be something to play with.
Has been off the road for 9 years and wont start, very likely because if old fuel. If the owner gets it going I might actually do it. :)

You're a braver man than i Henrik!

Could you hear the fuel pump running when it was trying to start? It's highly probable the contacts on the inertia switch have oxidised preventing it running. It will be hidden behind the centre console, under the radio on that one.
If you can reach it and whack it with a screwdriver handle to deploy it then reset it by pressing the button on the top, that should clean the contacts and might give you the necessary fuel through to get it running.

First job after assessing the bodywork and underbody for any repairs would have to be the timing belt, tensioner and water pump, then once you know that part is safe to use, drain the old coolant, fit a new thermostat, refill with clear water and add a cooling system flushing agent.
Run it for about an hour (add some synthetic ATF to the engine oil to help clean the internals, revive the seals and free the hydraulic tappets), let it cool down again to a reasonable level then remove the 'stat, refit the 'stat housing and remove the top hose at the radiator end.

Shove the garden hose into the top hose and turn the hose on and just let it run into the system (and out of the radiator top hose stub) for a good while, at least half an hour after it first runs clear. Assuming it is leak-free, , refit the top hose, refit the 'stat and then remove the bottom hose to drain out most of the water. Refit the bottom hose after draining, add 5L of ethylene glycol (not this new red OAT stuff! ) then top up with clean water.
Fit the cap on the expansion tank and run it until hot and then let it cool down overnight, topping up in the morning with water if necessary.

Then do an oil and filter change, first litre of fresh oil use synth ATF then top up with the normal 10W40 - this little lot will keep the engine happy while you sort the rest of it - new gearbox fluid, brake fluid and whatever else it needs! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Oh great write up Dave, saving that one!

Actually the car didnt even click. Battery was untouched for years etc and the extra he had in the garage wasnt charged. But it doesnt matter, the deal is that he gets it running first, then I probably Will take it back home. And it wont even be cheap. It Will be more or less for free. Then the plan is simple. A Quick visit at the Swedish MoT and see what they say. After that... well thats another day!

Also still have a green 820 mk1 manual available. Probably a wiser thing to do. But wisdom is pretty boring! :)

Thanks! :P

I just hope that he doesn't strip the cam belt when he gets it running.

Putting it in for an MoT is probably a wise move, as for the 2.0 n/asp, i think you might be disappointed.

However if you do get this Vitesse, this might be an idea simpley for various bits you might need :

viewtopic.php?f=15&t=14584

Sadly he's had some trouble with the exhaust cam and the cost of another head is prohibitive so he's selling as a non-running project. However there will be a lot of parts there that you couldn't otherwise get hold of for the Mk1 so could be worth a go, if only for spares.

Of course, getting it back to Sweden is another story............... :D
Cheers,
Dave

About spares: how is the availability and access to brake parts and other ”ordinary service parts” for the mk1? Rimmers have some but not much. EBay is a jungle really. I guess most of the engine stuff is the same as the mk2 827 but regarding suspension etc?
It will be interesting to hear if it runs. Apparently the timingbelt was changed a few years ago, but the wisest would be to be careful.

Rock Auto is probably your best bet on a lot of it, where it differs from the Mk2 which in fairness isn't much.

https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/ste ... v6,1267332

Have a look through that lot and it should give you an idea. They also hold a lot of stiff for the KA4 Legend 2.7 1988/9 which is about the closest you'll get to a Mk1 827 for most things.

If the timing belt was changed a few years ago, was that a few years before it was laid up or literally a few years ago?

The interval is 96k miles or 8 years - if it's been laid up for 9 years it would be almost a given that you need a new timing belt BEFORE you try starting it. There's every chance the belt has gone brittle simply because it's not been moved.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave.
Regarding the belt. The car hasn’t been in traffic for 9 years but has been regularly run however didnt start the last time he tried, I presume because of bad fuel. It was moved into this garage 2 years ago and was pretty ok then. The belt is very likely in need of a change as it is old, but it’s not an option to do the job before it runs. This is a shed really. A zero budget car more or less for free. If it runs and passes an MoT (with some minor service details as fails) it could be worth the time, money and effort to dig into it. If the belt snaps, well... :)

If it's been regularly run then the cam belt shouldn't be so much of an urgent job. It sounds very much like the problem was a flat battery, if he gets it charged up (assuming it's capable of taking a charge) then it should hopefully start.

Then it's all down to the MoT to see how bad it is!  :D
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave for the list of actions to revive the 827. I will use it on my grey 827 coupe ( if I manage to change the cambelt and water pump)

Rest assured, I will do my best to morally support Henrik with the black 827 hatchback

Haha :)
My wife mentioned a shovel and a hole in the ground...

Well lets see if he can make it run.

And a correction. It was still in traffic until 2012 so 6 years off the road. Stale fuel...

Did she specify who or what was going into the hole though?

If it's been run regularly since then i would think he's added fuel to the tank every so often unless he took it off the road with a full tank. Also if it won't turn over because the battery is flat, it won't make any difference on the fuel - yet!

Good to know you'll be there cheering Henrik on Gunnar! :D

Dave

Apparently, It was only a few litres left and he hasnt filled up in many years. The last time he tried to start it it didn’t run well, and then it died so I think the fuel is bad with obvious details like old plugs, bad airfilter etc etc making it worse.

Maybe we should collect it anyway Gunnar? Im just not too keen to put it in your barn if we fail. If it runs I dont mind making the obvious service and fixing up the exterior, brakes etc. I would even consider giving it a respray. :)

But, a troublesome C27A is not what I need...

Oh and she mentioned that Gunnar would fit in the hole. :D
