Hyundai Elantra.
Hire car in Canada, so no idea of European equivalent model.
Likes - it had cruise control. Engine near silent at idle
Dislikes - no SatNav. no speed limiter. Engine sounded like a bag of spanners when asked to do any actual work. Interior made of recycled pop bottles.
Another one of those current abortions that looks like a hatchback, but is actually a saloon. Adequate sized boot but access like a letterbox, so useless for carrying suitcase shaped luggage!
UGLY, UGLY. Looks like every second car in the car park so had to remember where I'd left it AND its registration number.

Smallest car I've been in for decades. Not counting MX-5s in that statement!

But as a cheap runabout it was adequate in a hire car sort of way.
Dusan's Dad - it's MY Rover son!
And it's my 40 too, or what's left of it.

Mondeo. Drove it a few hundred yards from the car park to save the owner a walk up a hill.
Likes - you can open and close the windows from the fob. Owner says it's economical.
Dislikes - usual black/grey/silver interior (yawn). Appears gutless and struggled with 3 adults and 2 kids but it's a 1600 or something. She's planning on getting a caravan, I reckon she'll need a new car.

Vauxhall Vivaro van from Enterprise. Only had 1300 miles and was spotless (until I put a scrape on it they didn't notice when I returned it).
Likes - goes like a stabbed rat if you give it the beans. Felt nicer than I expected (I've never driven a van before) and comfy.
Dislikes - gearbox seemed a bit wooden spoon in porridge, but maybe I was expecting too much.

Most recent different car i've been in is 1988 Volvo 760 GLEa estate - had no choice really as i bought it via ebay so had to drive it!

Likes : 2.8 V6 EFi engine, auto box, leather interior with working bum warmers, cavernous loadspace, factory dog guard plus other things

Dislikes : Worn shocks (and weak rear springs designed for Nivomats!) so every gearchange or braking causes a strange see-saw movement like being on the IoW ferry with a force 10 gale howling up Southampton Water!
Oh yeah - 15mpg! Hopefully improved with a new 'stat and fixing the exhaust blow!
Cheers,
Dave

Recently had a spin in a Mustang 2013 5.0 V8. 425bhp. Very quick in a straight line but feels quite american. I presume the car comes with a couple of rolls ducked tape and a litre of superglue.

Lexus GS450H. Interesting. I bought an old GS300 (3.0 V6 250bhp) as family car about a year ago and the 450h is very different. Hybrid is interesting, you can watch the monitor and see how the batteries recharge when you brake or just roll. Goes on full electric a lot=free. Quick too. 0-60 doesn't feel that impressive although it's silly quick in 5.5s, but 60-120 is astonishing. I don't think anything would keep up with it. I think I really need one.

Polo 1.? petrol. I rented it during vacation and the car was brand new with some 3000km on the clock. Very nice on the roll, solid, quiet, large on the inside, but the engine was a joke. Uphill it couldn't make it in second so I had to go down to first all the time! 5k rpm in first, changing to second down to 2k rpm and absolutely dead! Terrible, terrible German car.

16 plated Seat Leon diesel rental. Seems to go rather well (the Mrs driving) and has the least offensive interior of any budget car I've been in recently (no random silver painted bits inside and the instruments aren't garish). Likes - nothing specific, but it's quite a tasteful blue. Dislikes - nothing really except why have the fancy media centre in the middle of the dash but no satnav? And it's VAG, and I am VAG-averse.

'53 plate MG ZT-190 auto, black with silver/chrome MG stickers along the sides.

Like - capable, quiet (now it's had an oil & filter change), comfortable, reasonably quick.
Dislike - those horrible side graphics, lack of sump drain plug, over-complicated/too much BMW influence.
Cheers,
Dave

So there is no drain plug for the engine oil? Does that mean having an oil service involves the owner taking the car to a garage with specialist tools to remove the oil to perform a service or do something ridiculous that turns out expensive?

None at all and it's a totally different sump as well! Easier to change the oil than you might think though :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/201446238098? ... EBIDX%3AIT

That said it takes about half hour on the 75 as it's nearly 6L of oil in there and it pumps about a litre in 5 minutes. I also bought one as i thought when i first looked under my Volvo it didn't have a gearbox drainplug. As it happened it does (i was looking from the wrong angle and it's recessed to protect it) but i still used the pump. I've also bought some nylon tubing and adaptors to use on the inlet side to get to the bottom more reliably than with the basic PVC tubing it arrived with.
Cheers,
Dave

Actually something I didn't like about the Seat was the handbrake is over towards the passenger seat (scrimping a bit on the RHD conversion I assume) and the lack of anything decent to grab when closing the tailgate.

I had the same criticism of many RWD Vauxhalls, particularly Cavaliers. On those it could be argued it's offset to miss the propshaft but there's no excuse of the Seat as it's front wheel drive.

It's a wonder it still has one. A lot of higher spec stuff has done away with them and gone electric.

Interesting to hear what you have to say on the Leon, though diesel as I've put this on my short list of cars to consider.

We had a Skoda from new - bought from a longstanding Skoda dealer who were ace but didn't fit the VAG profile and lost the franchise to a big glitzy showroom with idiots running it. They went bust and their replacement wasn't much better. High servicing costs and spares too. Hence my aversion to VAG.

That happens when car companies get taken over by huge conglomerates. Around here we had small independent Skoda, Saab and Volvo dealers all family run with excellent reputations. As the manufacturer got taken over by, VAG, GM and Ford the franchises got taken away and moved them to the stainless steel and glass palaces run by their preferred dealer groups.

Thankfully my local Volvo dealer remained family run and is still excellent (if a bit pricey), but the Inchcape one in norwich was dire. Thankfully with the end of the Ford era, some of the franchises (including Norwich) have been handed back to the independents.

Am i right in thinking you are on about Hylton-Gott Tom? I've always had excellent service there, even through the Ford years. Confused the living daylights out of them recently by ordering two S/V40 coolant expansion tank brackets - the parts guy didn't think they would fit my 760! They won't of course but they will fit the 827s with a small additional bit of bracketry! :D
Cheers,
Dave

Yep, Hylton-Gott are absolutely brilliant. Mostly had dealings with parts - Paul who I normally deal with has some sort of magic memory, but gets quite confused now I've started ordering random volvo bits to fit to tractors!

Have used the service dept too for a couple of dealer-only repairs and my dad had an accident repair done by them too. Excellent work and service but definately not back-street prices.
