Please help save my sad SE
A couple of weeks ago during all the bad weather my poor SE came to grief on the way to work. A steep hill, covered in compacted ice and an errant Ford Galaxy driver (who was seen by one of my colleagues earlier driving like a loon) equals the sad state in the pictures below.
To say I was heart broken would be an understatement. I love my basic little SE and was very upset to see it in such a state.
My local Rover dealer said it could be repaired but there would be a big bill and parts would be a problem.
After a lot of soul searching I decided to hang the cost, and get him repaired. There aren't many SE's left and I didn,t want to consign another one to the scrap yard.
So I do hope you all can help. There is a list of bits below that I need.
Front Bumper complete with fittings (though there is one on E-bay for £30 bin)
2x headlights and fittings
front grill and fittings
o/s indicator lamp
Radiator (its an automatic SE)
Front panels (underneath the bumper)
O/s chassis rail front
front cross member and fittings
washer bottle
o/s plastic wheel arch liner
o/s wing
I know some of you may be thinking I should just throw it away but I just can't as I get very attached to my cars and want him back home.
I hope someone out there has the bits.
Thank you
Kate

Re: Please help save my sad SE
NOOOO !, this must be saved, I'm sure between us we must have most of the parts you need.
I've got some new indicators and headlamps that I was going to fit to mine after I respray it, but I could fit them sooner and send you my old ones, not perfect but they're fine.
Doesn't it need a bonnet too ?
Any chance that wing could be straightened ? It looks in good condition otherwise and the damage doesn't look terrible.
I'd be tempted to take it to more of a bodyshop / classic car restoration type operation, they might be more sympathetic to the repairs and more willing/able to use 2nd hand parts, repair the panels you have. Plus it's bound to be cheaper.

Ouch, doesn't look too bad however most insurance companies won't touch it. Are you claiming off the Galaxy drivers insurance? If so then obviously you can insist that they repair the car, however when claiming under your own policy you don't quite have the same power. Did you let the other driver know your occupation?

Re: the new bumper you've seen. Yours looks to be a small bumper one? I think the new ones are big bumpers off the later MK1s.

Re: Please help save my sad SE
Out of interest, are the sub-panels (i.e. the crossmember and front legs etc) going to be the same on a mk2 ? Probably more chance of finding somebody breaking a mk2 (Chris !) than a mk1.
Small bumpers are hard to find, could always fit a pair of big bumpers though.
Whatever you do, don't scrap it, or let them write it off, worse case I'll buy it off you and drag it up here to fix, seriously.

What a disaster
Really pleasing that you want to press ahead and repair it though.
I am guessing insurance company is not involved? That looks waaaay "beyond economic repair" from the insurance companies view point.
The shopping list of parts looks like a standard quote from a body shop used to quoting for insurance jobs - and is almost certainly excessive. I would be very surprised if the chassis rail is deformed, and if it is - could not be pulled straight again with a body-shop hydraulic kit. The wing will certainly straighten up if a good replacement is hard to source. Other than that , used bumpers and lights should turn up if you ask the right people
Don't be disheartened - I have repaired worse crash damage myself with basic hand tools, so am sure this can be saved.
I think the advice to take it to a more sympathetic style of body shop, rather than one accustomed to late-model insurance repairs is sound.
Good luck.

Re: Please help save my sad SE
What a terrible shame. At least though the car is repairable, and most importantly no one was hurt.
As said, I reckon most of the "hidden" things could be sourced from a Mk2. As for the rad, I think a manual 820 one would be the easiest to source (IIRC they were the same on all manual cars, regardless of engine (turbo aside)). Just make sure you get one with the fan switch plugs...

Re: Please help save my sad SE
There's a great deal on manual rads on ebay at the minute, I bought one of them a month or so back for twice this price, in fact I've just ordered another for stock !
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250713210988
Only problem is with yours being an auto you might need the type with the cooler in the bottom.

Re: Please help save my sad SE
I think the 820 autos use the same rad as the manuals. It is only the 827 autos that, to my knowledge have the built in cooler in the rad.
One or two 800s...

Re: Please help save my sad SE
Auto and Manual 820 rads are the same. The auto 820 has a seperate oil cooler.
The cross member you need...is it like the one at the bottom of the front end and onto which the rad is mounted. Like this car...?
I am sorry to hear of this, Kate.
I think you may also need a slam panel. That's the bit that sits across the top of the rad and into which the top of the rad is located.
I can help with:
New or used headlamps
Slam panel
Grille and clips
VTB

Re: Please help save my sad SE
This is what X-Part or Rimmers still list as available, this is MK2 panels but I dont think they changed.
ABG37014-PLATFORM BONNET LOCKING R/H £31.53 +VAT
ABC41007-CROSSMEMBER ASSEMBLY-RADIATOR LOWER £38.60 +VAT
ABC41006-CROSSMEMBER LOWER £11.01 +VAT (THE BIT IN BRADS PICCY)
ABH41012-HEADLAMP MOUNTING ASSEMBLY R/H £33.09 +VAT
DPG10030- BRACKET BODY-BUMPER MOUNTING £NLA SO SECONDHAND
PCC10036EVA- RADIATOR £131.17 +VAT
Not saying you need all the above, would also doubt the chassis leg being bent or beyond repair. These are available @£600 but the work involved in fitting one would double that price. The shunt doesn't look bad enough to have bent this but then I am only looking at a picture.
Wheelarch liner, bumper, bumper bracket, wing, headlamps and indicator would be secondhand, some of which I have to compliment Brads list. Then a bit of spraying and bobs your uncle, fannies your aunt. If the chassis rail is sound I reckon £600-700. Not including what looks like a bent bonnet but you haven't mentioned it?

Re: Please help save my sad SE
Thanks chaps for all your support
I have spoken to Ware Rover this morning and passed on your comments. They have all the necessary hydraulic jigs etc in their body shop and also contacts in the classic car industry re straightening things. The manager there is very helpful and am sure will sort things the best he can. As he says anything can be done but its at what price. He is going to speak to a chap who restores classic cars to have a look at it and see what can be salvaged.
Re the bonnet it is just the front o/s corner which could be repaired (which is a small mercy).
Didn't realise there were two different size bumpers. (this forum really is a font of knowledge. thanks Chris).
Thanks for the list Dave I have passed this on to the garage.

When we're talking chassis leg are we talking inner wing?
Like these? I have a new old stock pair in one of my garages.
