LPG Pointers
Just want to revive an old topic about LPG which I have been curious about for a few years now.
How many annual miles would make driving on Autogas viable?
Up until now I haven’t entertained the idea because I only drive 7000-10000 miles each year.
If I’m right in thinking LPG is about half the price of unleaded currently then I would probably drive a fair bit more. At the moment I only drive on a must basis because I have to fill up with unleaded once a week. I was quoted £1500 last year for an Autogas approved conversion.
Speaking to my Rover mechanic he didn’t recommend LPG at all but on the other hand everything I have read about LPG either on the internet or by talking to other people has been positive.
What does the future look like for Autogas? I know there are a few here that run on this so I would appreciate all suggestions and feedback.

Re: LPG Pointers
LPG will be around as long as petrol is and the government appears to be committed to maintaining the price differential. Given that the "per mile" costs are about 45% lower then you will have paid for the conversion when you have spent about £1700 on LPG (during which time you would have spent £3200 on petrol). If that unleaded costs £1.40 per litre then that would be 2285 litres or 503 gallons.
If your car does 30mpg, then you will need to do about 15,000 miles to get your money back. If you do 25 mpg then you'll only need to do 12,600.
The 827 runs nicely on LPG - especially mk1s with no cat because you can advance the ignition timing to take advantage of the 110 RON fuel

Re: LPG Pointers
Thanks Richard. This sounds very promising. I’m pondering about getting the Mk2 827 converted. I’m not sure how much mpg this does but when I do use it I’ll find out and it’s likely I’ll do more miles up to 15000 after the conversion.

Re: LPG Pointers
Just one thing I thought of though. If you advance the ignition to the max, will the car still run ok when switching back to petrol?

Re: LPG Pointers
It always did on my mk1 - but why would you run it on petrol? The advanced ignition would only be an issue when driving hard and anyway, the mk2 doesn't have the feature so won't apply to you.

If the tank runs low on gas doesn't it automatically switch to petrol?Richard Moss wrote:It always did on my mk1 - but why would you run it on petrol? The advanced ignition would only be an issue when driving hard and anyway, the mk2 doesn't have the feature so won't apply to you.

Re: LPG Pointers
Below are rough calculations I made with the help of the internet
15000 Miles
29MPG
129.9 Unleaded Fuel cost pence/Litre
= £3054.50
LPG is about 15% less efficient then unleaded so I did 15% of 29mpg which is 24.65
15000 Miles
24.65 MPG
71.20 LPG Fuel cost pence/Litre
=£1969.67

Re: LPG Pointers
Should do but if you're converting a mk2 then they don't have the manual ignition advance so there's nothing to worry about. You will need to run on petrol for a brief period when starting - I used to do about 30-60 seconds on mine.

Re: LPG Pointers
Say I drive 50 miles a week (which I do about) - it's not worth the conversion so I'm wondering if I can somehow justify driving more miles. Though this is all theoretical. I need to do more homework.Richard Moss wrote:Should do but if you're converting a mk2 then they don't have the manual ignition advance so there's nothing to worry about. Re: LPG Pointers
Simply not worth it unless you're doing several hundred miles per week or plan to run the car for a very long time.

Re: LPG Pointers
Ok.. At present my mileage varies widely somewhat, contradictory to what I was saying. This conversion will be later down the line.

Re: LPG Pointers
The only issue I ever had with LPG is not enough local stations to me.
I would make sure it's easily available on your normal routes if you go down that route.
