CAR iNSURANCE Recommendations/tips or advice

Post by deano » Fri Apr 01, 2016 9:14 pm

So I`ve now bought a `daily driver` Astra mk5 diesel and moved it on to my insurance with my 15 years no claims

Now I have to insure my 827 Fastback 1993 on a new policy with no NCD, they wont let me use the same Ncd for both cars :(

Currently being quoted about £425

Any tips on getting it cheaper ???

I tried multicar polices but they seemed no cheaper
Aviva wanted £1200

Any Advice anyone ?

Multicar is a con. I insure my Volvo with admiral who make a big thing of multicar, but were nearly three times too expensive for the Rover.

I'd have thought you could use a copy of your current policy as proof of your NCD when opening a new policy with a new insurance company.

For simple policies, I've found Swiftcover to be very good on more than one occasion.

Try Lancaster Insurance Dean - just renewed my Sterling with them for £185, fully comp, 6000 miles/year, classic policy so no NCB needed (or accrued usually) and yours should be eligible if it's a Sterling, Vitesse or a coupe. You may have to fight them a bit if it's an SLi but there's not many of them left now either so don't see why they shouldn't have classic status too.

https://www.lancasterinsurance.co.uk/

You could also try Adrian Flux for a classic policy, they actually came out £26 cheaper than Lancasters but i find it easier just remembering one phone number if i need their customer service instead of 3 different numbers for 3 different cars.

Good luck with it, let us know if you find a bargain! :D
Cheers,
Dave

yea... in London and parked on the street don't forget.
I re-quoted it as kept in a `locked compound` (you know the one) and it still came back at £869 :(

The search goes on...

Good point - forgot about the London weighting on premiums. When i moved up here from the south side of the pipe 12 years ago, my insurers sent me a cheque for just over £100 and reduced my last 3 monthly payments to almost nothing - that was on a Nissan 300C.

Try putting it in a garage with 5000 miles and SD&P use only, no travel to and from work, see if it comes back anywhere near sensible. It might even be worth renting a council lock up to reduce the premiums if it brings it down enough.
Cheers,
Dave

The council garages round the corner from me are now over £100 a month now... (1200 a year)

I had one about 15-20 years ago, it was £20 a month then

That's steep for a council garage - i pay £7.50 a week for mine (£32.50/month) so that's 3 times the cost, if not more! Obviously wouldn't be a good way to get your insurance down!

Dave

Also, don't forget that sometimes it's worth ringing the specialist insurance places, rather than using the website quotes. You can explain your circumstances and then the brokers can open their special 'classic' rolodex to direct your quote to those insurers instead.

The online quotes are usually only for 'standard' policies, so no NCD and 'second car' status don't factor in quite the same way.
