Re: ricky's rover sterling
Mine is still on the same engine - shows that regular maintenance and changing the Lambdas every once in a while improves things.
As a point of interest, the Lambda sensor in my Jeep is a schedlued service item at 10 years/120k miles. In some states in the USA, it has an "Emissions Timer" that counts down to the change point so it is often more frequent but if it hits 10 years before the count down on miles is reached it still throws spanners in the works until the Lambda is changed and the counter reset.

Re: ricky's rover sterling
OK, thanks. I'll see what i can find online (my local auto factors tends to get confused with anything out of the ordinary!) as they can't be that expensive and given the cost of getting the system discharged then refilled, a few quid for a piddly little valve seems like good insurance.
That said if all else fails, i do have one on a scrapper.............

Re: ricky's rover sterling
A hunt online proved fruitful - not only did i find a "selection box" of valves but also a tool that means the system doesn't need to be evacuated to renew the valve! Here's links to the ebay listings :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361634030571? ... EBIDX%3AIT
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/391513442052? ... EBIDX%3AIT
First is the valves, second is the tool which is really easy to use :
1) Attach it to the LP valve
2) Open the gate valve (lever in line with tool)
3) Push plunger down and rotate to engage with valve (The jaws are an interference fit with the valve so retains it during removal/replacement)
4) Using thumb pressure to prevent the plunger being pushed up by the system pressure, rotate the plunger anti-clockwise to remove the valve
5) Once the valve is loose, allow the plunger to release slowly then close the gate valve and unscrew the plunger body from the top of the tool, revealing the valve on the end of it
6) Fit new valve into plunger jaws
7) Re-attach the plunger body to the tool and open the gate valve
Using thumb pressure to hold the plunger down, screw the new valve in fingertight
9) Withdraw the plunger
10) Close the gate valve
11) Have a cup of tea!
Handy for future reference hopefully!

mot time again.. failed this time, emissions, no stop lights, ball joint gaiter, and a tyre.. not to terrible, emissions were almost ok so a good run will sort them.. stop light are not working so fuse or switch most likely, unusual for all bulbs to blow at once.. new gaiter for ball joint and its a top one so easy, and 2 new tyres to order.. hopefully should all be done on Monday.. regards ricky

Not the end of the world all minor stuff.
Big bucket of boiling water and dishwasher tablets, stick the cat in it for a couple days worked for me(thanks to the people who suggested it)

Re: ricky's rover sterling
What Shaun said - the dishwasher tablets work a treat! I used a 3' planter/trough/window box thing (couple of quid from Wilko), filled it up with boiling water and a few dishwasher tablets, dumped the cat in for a couple of days/nights, moved it around every so often then gave it a good rinse through with the garden hose after - both ways!
Exhaust lovely and clean (0.00% CO) and a nice fresh lemony smell too! Also gave the outside of the cat a swift coat of VHT paint followed by some Satin Black.
Could be both your brake light bulbs - had a pair of rear fog bulbs fail on a Mk5 Cortina once, they worked when i got to the station but not on the ramp!
Good luck with the retest!

Re: ricky's rover sterling
What he said ^^^^^! To be honest you've inspired me a bit more Rick, my enthusiasm was beginning to flag for my Volvo after another stupid problem that should have been found and fixed ages ago! Fuel leak would you believe, should have been picked up on MoT but easily missed until it started getting worse! Item 15 in this drawing :
Links the pump output to the filter inlet, all slung in a cradle underneath the car. Very tiny jet of fuel that couldn't be seen, only felt! It made a hole in my nitrile gloves though! Fuel economy was down to 11-15mpg as well and the car stank of fuel!
Off to get some fuel hose clips as i already have some 8mm rubber fuel hose - Volvo want £48.48 for the part - i don't think so!!!
Thanks for reviving my enthusiasm and best ofluck tomorrow for the retest!
