1998 820 Vitesse - 12 months MOT, lots of spares

Post by mercedade » Mon Jul 17, 2017 1:11 pm

I've just got back from the test centre with a shiny new 12 month MOT, so I'm finally selling my Vitesse.

It's been the longest I've ever kept a car (5 years nearly) and I genuinely am gutted to be letting it go. However, I know it's time to move it on, I've got my ZT to keep me going, and there's just no space left for the Rover.

The car itself is here:

http://www.rover800.info/forum/viewtopi ... =2&t=10156

And recent pictures:

The write-up:

In my last 4 and bit years it's had a new clutch kit and slave cylinder, cambelt, 4 new tyres (last year's MOT treat), rear back box, cat, both complete sills including some inner sill reconstruction, plus Christ knows how many other smaller things.

Known faults - drivers switch pack is dodgy (but Dave Scooby is currently soldering me a good one, so he could just send it to you!), no air con (leak from pipework).

And bodywork.

The worst is the rear n/s arch, which is a horrible mess of filler and rust. None of this is going to cost you an MOT, but it definitely detracts from the look of it. Dozens of paints chips, blebs on doors, roof paint is a mess and so on.

Good points - both front wings are rust free, and it is mechanically absolutely, crazily spot on. It starts the first flick of the key, no cranking whatsoever, manual boost controller and boost gauge means it is particularly fast. K+N panel filter, Volvo expansion tank, genuine Rover headlight covers, replaced and rust proofed filler neck, braided Goodrich brake hoses all round.

With all the spares I've got for it (eg 2 x scuttle panels, random assortments of mirrors, temp sensors (new), boot struts), with 12 months MOT and a fair amount of history, I think I'll be looking for around the £700 mark, but I'm listening if that's wildly off course. For reference, the welding and tyres alone cost more than £500 last year. I'm not silly enough to think that I'll get back everything I've spent on it, nor that this is the finest example out there, but I do think you'll struggle to find a better driving one than this.

The 17'' Vitesse alloys are getting refurbished on Thursday. This probably seems silly now, but it's been booked in for a while and the wheels on the ZT were refurbed last year, so I can't even get them done. So this Vitesse will actually be sold with recent tyres and newly refurbed wheels.

Happy to provide any pictures or more info - I'll also be advertising this around the place as I do need to get shift on with selling this thing.

It's a shame you're selling it Adrian!

The window switchpacks just got a whole lot more urgent for several reasons and this adds to them! Hopefully have at least one sorted for you and a fusebox in a day or three. :D

No Offence , but the cost of the refurbed alloys wont make it worth any more.

I`d cancel it and keep the cash, you may need it if the motor don't make the asking price :?

Alternatively , get them done and sell the wheels to me... cheap :D

Yeah, I know - the trouble is the cash has already been 'spent' (it was a present from back in April) and there's absolutely nothing that needs doing to the MG, so the lucky Rover gets the benefit.

Happy to sell the wheels separately, although I'd need another set in p/x, with better-than-barely-legal tyres already fitted.

It is a shame I know! I've been putting this off for such a long time, but when the (second) ZT came along, I've had to accept defeat. Shuffling cars around every day is becoming annoying.

Great news on the window switch and fusebox, hope it's not too tiresome.

Adrian i would thinking your pricing of £700 well attract a buyer leaving them enough to make the areas you mentioned. I sold one earlier this year my 95my vitesse in nightfire for £600 with similar amount of work needed. Mine and your car are worth more that that but it make a car attractive to but as a running project. Good luck with the same and well wait for your return to 800's in the motor too distant future

I'm just glad i'm able to finally get round to them Adrian! I've now caught up with stuff i should have been doing 9 months ago which after 9 months isn't bad going from a starting point where i was 12-15 months behind!

Am I the only one on here who thinks it is staggeringly (way too!) cheap? I think we are doing ourselves no favours in selling them at this level. Surely, even in this none pristine condition, 2K is not unreasonable. I fully appreciate that what we 'value' them at is different to what people will pay. But if we keep talking them down...

Values of tidy, ie not a wreck, 800's is starting to climb and there is a need to get over this resistence of not paying good money for a good car. I would not even contemplate selling my Vitesse for as little as this, with less work done and fewer spares.

Just re-read your original post Adrian, for some reason i thought originally you said £1700 which is why i made no comment before.

Believe me, I would love to be able to say that I agree. I think that it's a ridiculously low price for a well maintained, high powered, rare, utterly competent car.

However, the rest of the world seems to disagree with you and me.

I know that single-make forums are often the worst place to sell cars because everyone already has at least one, but bearing in mind that amongst like-minded enthusiasts even at this utter bargain of a price I've managed to attract exactly zero interest (honestly, no hard feelings - I fully understand why, and I've often said as much when former members would get stroppy about the lack of interest in their particular car in years gone by), I honestly don't believe that listing this on a £99 start ebay advert would get me any more than about £600, if I was lucky. I don't think a reserve would help me because that seems to put off quite a few potential bidders. I know that bodywork is the big concern for most people when looking at this. Those looking for entry-level classic ownership, if they were sitting on the fence about whether or not a 98 Vitesse qualified, the dodgy paintwork would make them jump right off. You and I know that there's nothing troubling about the bodywork except looks, but sadly you and I aren't buying this one.

The fact is that despite what we all know and love about these cars, the world is probably 18 months away from seeing them in the same light.

If anyone knows of an enthusiast tucked away somewhere with pocketfulls of cash, desperate to snap up an S reg Vitesse that looks a bit tatty but has been loved for many years, by all means send 'em my way - I'll let them steal it away from under my nose for a bargain £1k.

Whilst it's as gutting to me as I'm sure it is to you guys see these cars still floating around sub £1k, I don't have the space or time to act as a one-man fight against the economy, single-handedly pushing prices up to my desired value waiting for the world to catch up.

Tl:dr - I agree with you, but no-one else agrees with us!

What's even more gutting is that if I do manage to sell it, I'll be Rover 800-less tantalisingly short of making my 1000th post.
