When I have carried out a manual reset of the stepper it hasn't clicked until I turned off the ignition. Best of British on eBay have new stepper motors about £40, might be worth investing in one?

OK Dave. I have to move the motor tomorrow morning. So might do it a little bit earlier and give it a run on the A35. Unfortunately it's parked just off the High Street so no easy run to get to the Bridport 'By Pass'.

Crossed fingers.

Evening All.
Quick update.
Purchased a used 'working' Stepper Motor.
Fitted it. Alas......

Thought the problem had been resolved, as after resetting the motor. Engine seemed to stay idling over while stationary, quite happy. Much better than previous.
Then took it about 500 hundred yards on public roads, then cut out while pulling up at junctions, etc
Back to....Original fault.
Fault, I asumme is pre: stepper motor, as still vibrating on Key Postion 2 after reset.

I feel with ANY good visual pictures or a 2017 Hanyes Manuals..which is tòday ..YOUTUBE !
I cannot progess with this stupid fault as I haven't the relevant engineering skill sets.

Need to get it to a true Rover 800 engineer, or offer a few days free accomadation in Bridport for Labour only (parts excluded and more than willing to pay PROPER market pricing.)

can you check what the part number is on your CCU under the dash behind the fuse board and report the number back along with the year of registration and vin number as I suspect it has been changed and that is what is causing the stepper to continually click after switching off.

Hi Mike,

couple more questions - if you plant your right foot on the floor and keep it there, does it still cut out?
If it doesn't cut out there's a good chance it's the throttle position sensor (TPS) - either faulty or broken wire, dirty connections etc

Second, have you changed the fuel filter and tried some fuel system cleaner (e.g. Redex, Comma Injector Magic or similar) through it?
Cheers,
Dave

I'd also vote for TPS. Throttle position sensor.

As the car has 42k on the clock and has been laid dormant for some time before being recommissioned. It is possible that the part of track in the TPS that controls idle and light load has worn out prematurely.

The full throttle test will determine if it's the TPS at fault.

Give it a go and we look forward to hearing back from you.

Cheers Guys.
Going to look at the Manuals for the TSP (where and how to access).
Have changed the fuel filter and added Fuel Cleaner.

Will post the VIN number.

After changing the Stepper and resetting it the car ticked over OK'ish, a bit lumpy but ticked over.
So I thought I would give it a good run out. As said above, got to the High Street and when pulling up in traffic it cuts out. If I try and keep the revs up over 1.5K it keeps going. But a bit of liability with clutch and handbrake work in traffic.

I keep you updated and thanks again.

Cannot believe a year has almost gone by and this car has sat in my unit unused and enjoyed.
I undertook to do most of the tasks listed above.

(As stated I'm more wax and polish than grease and oil, but happy to have a go)
Also, after taking the car to a local old Rover Garage I lost confidence in there ability as this cut out was picked up when they did the last MOT and did nothing to cure.

Things I undertook....
New Stepper Motor.
New Fuel Filter.
Throttle Resets.
Carb Clean

Then I got to the stage of low revs and engine cutting out while moving out of the garage.

So it went back in and cover on.
A Year later, I need to get it on the road and an MOT on it.
But would like to change some off the items as listed above prior to getting it into a garage.
I want to fit top quality/ultimate parts for this model
Can any body recommend the best brand for - Coil
- Spark Plugs
- Distribution Cap and leads
That I should invest in.
These are jobs I am capable of doing and have the knowledge that they have been completed.
Before handing it over

How much fuel is in the tank? I'm thinking add some meths to the fuel to get rid of condensation in the fuel, that will almost certainly sort the problem you describe. Needs to be at least 10% meths though so if you've only got a couple of gallons in the tank then 1-2L should work.

As for plugs, go for NGK, you'll need BKR-6E if memory serves correctly. Also check the rotor arm as well as the dizzy cap. Doubtful you'll need a coil but that one could use a clean - carb cleaner works well to degrease the coil tower.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave
Fuel/Petrol. Not much. Red Light has been on. Just put 1/2 gallon of fresh fuel in. So will add another gallon and put in with some meths. (Any particular brand, or just out of the fridge at my local wine'ohs shop?)

Will order some new plugs as detailed. Would also like to order a new coil if there's an upgraded one to the original as per image previously uploaded.

Thanks again.

Hi Mike,

this is the meths i use, best price i've found for the quantity :

https://www.toolstation.com/shop/Painti ... rit/p99550

I'm fairly certain there isn't an upgrade to the standard coil, it's already a high output jobby designed to work with MEMS so if it's working then just give it a clean to get rid of the grease.

The plugs will probably bring the biggest difference after getting rid of whatever moisture is in the tank by using the meths.

Rough rule of thumb is that the "Feed Me" light comes on when the tank level is down to 2 gallons so if you add another gallon with the meths, it should be about right. Run the engine for a short while after just to get the meths circulating the system and if it was condensation you should notice a difference fairly quickly, particularly on the cold start.
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks Dave Great info.
Will have a run over to Toolstaion as there is a Euro Parts and Halfords next door so hope to pick up some plugs.
After running the engine with the meths added. Do I just let the meths evaporat in the tank by its self or do I remove the fuel cap and open the filler lever cap to let it 'Out of the tank?
Cheers

EuroCarPrats are generally much cheaper than Halfrauds, especially if you use their promo code "SPRING55" and order online to collect in-store.

https://www.eurocarparts.com/

These are the plugs, remember you need 4 of them :

https://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Rove ... a0b&000301

Should work out just under a tenner with the promo code if i've got my mental arithmetic somewhere close!

As for the meths, add it to the tank, put the cap back on and forget it. :D

It emulsifies with the water so the water can be burned off during the combustion cycle. It has a higher vapour point than petrol so leaving the cap off will leave you with a tank with only water left, the petrol will evaporate first then the meths and eventually the water. Not a good idea!

Dave
