Re: Rover 820 Vitesse Sport Lux Gold
Spent a couple of hours on the car this evening. I refitted the power steering cooler, then turned my attention to the water pump. I bought a pattern part pump from Euro Car Parts and then a set of genuine Land Rover -rings. Covered it in Hylomar Blue and stuck it into the housing. I put copper slip on the bolt threads as some of them felt horrible on removal. Next time should be easier.
Then I cleaned up the rear side, fitted a new O-ring and hylomar blue and bolted it up to the engine. Felt good to be putting something back on the engine.
Opened up my timing belt kit and fitted the tensioner. I checked the free length of the tensioner spring. The book says it has to be between 57.5mm and 58.5 mm. This one was bang in the middle.
Ive ordered a new crank seal, so I removed the old ne using the drill and two screws method. Worked first time so I was pretty chuffed.
Last thing I started cleaning up the gasket face on the cylinder head. I have been debating where to split the cam carrier off the cylinder head in order to clean up the vale seats. But the compression test was ok, so I'm just going to change the cam seals and refit it.

I love the water pump setup on the T series - so user friendly

Re: Rover 820 Vitesse Sport Lux Gold
I hope that pump never needs to come out!
I would have used silicone grease (or Vaseline) on the "O" rings, at a push Threebond 1215 which is the "unbranded version of "Hondabond" that is widely used in the 827 to help certain things seal.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THREEBOND-12 ... 1912846248
The "branded" stuff is about twice the price for a tiny tube so that one is good value. Also only a little of it is used in comparison, just enough to hold the seal/"O" ring/gasket in place. Worth knowing for your 827 as well!

Re: Rover 820 Vitesse Sport Lux Gold
Why not Hylomar?
And Threebond is an rtv that will set. I dont want that.

Re: Rover 820 Vitesse Sport Lux Gold
I was referring to how much Hylomar you put on it!
The Rover WSM calls for Loctite 405 which if looked for online now, comes up with an LED device designed to speed up cure times on certain adhesives/sealants in the Loctite range.
As far as i can work out, the original (30+ years ago when originally specified) Loctite 405 was similar to Threebond 1215 although one reference to it that i found suggested it was similar to blue Hylomar.
Who knows now? Loctite were changing numbers of products from the start of time as far as i can work out. I remember back in 1990 i was doing a planned maintenance service on a metallising machine and the book on the machine called for Loctite xxx thread locking compound. We only had Loctite yyy thread locking compound so i queried it with my boss who informed me it was the same stuff, Loctite had just changed the number!

Re: Rover 820 Vitesse Sport Lux Gold
Ah right, yes the nozzle got gummed up, so i was decanting from the end of the bare tube using my gloves and finger, so it got a bit messy. Wiped of the excess before and after i fitted it though.

Yes, quite agree. I did it in under one hour being a novice on it. But obviously the bolts and nuts came off as they should. The could present major trouble if snapped.Richard Moss wrote: ↑Tue Jul 24, 2018 8:58 pmI love the water pump setup on the T series - so user friendly
Pretty beat up car Nitro, you're doing a great job! I read about the issue of it being slower than a 827. But once you have it going again it will be flying past any 827 and most of your neighbours cars aswell.

I agree too, changing the water pump was the first job I did on my coupe, over 10 years ago and through the guidance of people on here.Richard Moss wrote: ↑Tue Jul 24, 2018 8:58 pmI love the water pump setup on the T series - so user friendly

Re: Rover 820 Vitesse Sport Lux Gold
Its been a busy evening. Started with the inlet manifold. Cleaned it all up with Gunk and petrol and rags and then a high pressure hose. Did the fuel rail and injector loom separately.
Dirty
Clean
Then I layed everything out on a table and started putting it all back together with new gaskets.
I sent the injectors away to www.injectortune.co.uk/ They have a mail order service. You just fill out the form on their website, post them off, they refurb them which includes cleaned and flow tested, new filters and O-rings and then post them back. Think it only cost £58. Bargain.
They give you a flow report of before and after too.
Inlet fully assembled
Then replaced the core plugs and cam seals at the front of the head.
And replaced the water core plug at the rear and the cam drive blanking plugs.
Inlet bolted to the head and she is ready to go back on car!
Cleaned up the block and fitted new Klinger metal multilayer headgasket and brand new genuine Dowels.
Then last thing I got the head on and torqued down properly. Phew. That's a lot for one evening!
The only slight problem was that all of the gromets that go between the cam raer cover and cyclinder head bolts had swollen and turned to jelly from extended periods of exposure to the engine oil. Rimmer bros don't sell them, ans so far I vant find anyone who does. I could reuse mine but they are seriously past their best. Part number I need is LHY10001, I need 5 and they look like this...

That's ok too! I was called in by the wife myself (garage in house) a few hours ago as she thought I could continue stripping the Garrett Turbo elbow tomorrow instead.
