Has the housing been off before?

Be careful with the bolts if not.

I've never removed it myself. And because there is no service history before Brad's owning, there's no way of telling.
I wouldn't be surprised if both rad and stat are original to the car.

Blue-Print is good kit, the gasket should be in the form of a grooved rubber "O" ring. Smear a bit of silicone grease or Vaseline on the outside of it to help it slide into its watertight position when you fit it.

What temperature is it you've got?
I've no idea Dave re temp and I'll be honest I meant to check that before comparing.
I guess i can cross reference the part number and maybe the temp info is on the web.

If memory serves, the temperature is stamped on the 'stat and if not, usually the part number will tell you. Looking it up on t'internet, i see Blue Print are now part of Bilstein Group. The 827 has been dropped from the listings.

However, looking up the 416 from 89-96, it appears to only show one option of an ADH29207 with a temperature of 78C - the older part number would have been ADH29207.078 so that has changed.

Like Chris says, be very careful with the 'stat housign bolts. Douse them well in WD40 or similar (better still, some WMP) and loosen them a bit at a time. If they go tight as you're removing them, squirt more penetrating fluid on, re-tighten them and then loosen them again. Repeat this tighten/loosen procedure, loosening a little more each time until the bolt comes all the way out.
There is no shortcut to this and being heavy handed will result in the bolt shearing causing a whole new world of pain!
Cheers,
Dave

Cheers for this Dave (and Chris). The thermostat hasn't arrived yet but when it does, I'll look for the temperature marking stamp (or part number if no stamp)

The exhaust oxygen sensors arrived yesterday.
It should be an easier job doing this, because there is better access to the sensors on the OBX manifold. Plus the sensors were fitted recently in the last 1/2 years.
The original sensors in comparison fitted to the original manifold were a pig to get to and then a nightmare to undo.

My problem is however, its not easy for me to jack the car up now that both jacking points have completely gone - rotted away. The only place I can safely jack the car is at the sub-frame. And even so I have to consider where I should carefully place the axle stands.
So until I get the welding all done for the MOT, I'll either have to put that job on hold, or take the car to a garage locally for the sensors to be changed - at least I know the guy there and he won't rip me off like some have in the distant past.

Have you got a trolley jack Charles? The front towing eye/lashing point is a good place to jack the front up and the rear subframe mounts is an ideal place for axle stands. That should make life much easier for you to get the job done sooner rather than later.

Alternatively invest in a pair of drive-on ramps and run the front up on them, no worries about jacking it up then. :D
Cheers,
Dave

Good Ideas Dave as usual :) My thermostat just arrived a few moments ago, so I'll take a peek at it now. 8)

I'm not an axle stand fan personally, just don't trust them if anything moved.

My favourite trick was to jack up the car and put old wheels (preferably steels) flat on the floor under the wheels on the car.

Or even just blocks of wood like this.

The blocks of wood under the wheels is a very novel idea.
When I've used the stands I put small blocks of wood on the stands which acts as a seat between the stand and the car jacking point.
Stops any sliding..but a problem arises if the wood splits apart usually when it's old.

This is the thermostat (HKT not blueprint) as it arrived. Boxed with no gasket that I could see.
The temperature marking is 78°

See if you can find the seal (gasket) online Charles, if not give me a shout and meanwhile i'll try to find the ones i have. I know where i have at least one but should have a bag of more somewhere, genuine ones as well if memory serves.

Also look for Rover 216/416 1989-95 'stat seals, they're the same. If it's the original 'stat and seal it'll be like jelly when you get it out.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gasket-therm ... 3485422741

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Blue-Print-T ... 3521735294

First link to a seal, second to a kit ('stat and seal) so if you ordered a 'stat kit and there is no seal, they've ripped you off big time - £8 for a seal is a bit excessive!
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks for this great help Dave. I will be looking around the web, if I can get a cheaper gasket. The gasket on ebay is nearly as much as the stat i paid for :o

I did see the same gaskets somewhere else. I looked in case this part didn't have a gasket included. Though I was under the assumption it had one.
Bit of a small blunder but it will be right :D

You're welcome Charles, i'll see if i can find the others that i have, just in case. Worth noting that the same seal is used in a fair few Honda engines too. :D

I just noticed something Dave. The shape of the gasket designed to fit my thermostat is oval (see on box diagram)

The gaskets in your ebay link are circular shaped.
