Replaced my frankenstein backbox (so called because its made from lots of different exhausts, and its been cut open and had its inards removed) with a Powerflow backbox. The flange was different, mine was the assymetrical type as I'm using a diesel center pipe because its bigger. So I had to weld on a different flange. The main pipe itself was mild steel, so I silver Hammerited it all once welded up. You can see in the pictures how many times my old exhaust has been welded.
Also the backbox pipe was 20mm too short to meet my center pipe so I welded an extra piece in. Even now the tailpipe is a good couple of inches back under the bumper, but the hanging brackets dictated the position.

Its way too loud though, real boy racer stuff and it drones at motorway speed. The standard box sits neatly under the car too whereas the Powerflow box hangs low even though the tailpipe bends up.

I guess we could have predicted that! Smile still, at least you can give the mig a rest for a bit.

I patched up a rusty exhaust backbox on Phillippa's cabriolet and it looked a bit like your old one. I thought it might just scrape through 1 mot and last a couple of months - it ended up doing 18 months+ and passing 2 tests!

It may have sounded nice 20 years ago, but i like my cars quiet, especially as I'm driving a Sterling, quick and quiet.
Its actually so loud at full bore its embarrassing when overtaking, it just doesn't suit the car.

A long time ago when I replaced a standard exhaust on my Volvo T5 for a straight through one, the single rear backbox was replaced by 2 boxes to keep things quiet.

Stainless exhausts depend on who made them and whether they were bespoke.

Then it's down to the customer. The one on my fastback makes more noise but in a nice way and doesn't drone at all.

Mine doesn't drone either although it's louder than standard, like Chris says it's just dependant who made it.

Just got to say Mark, I really admire your patience and persistence with the old exhaust (and the new one come to think of it)!! I just put a new back box on my Sterling, I bet you could have fixed the old one and had another three years out of it.

Steve

I don't believe in spending lots of money on cars. Every car has an exhaust so there thousands out there that can be salvaged and repaired. Its a spare part to car value ratio, on a £200 car any repair over £50 is too much. It'd be a different story on a expensive car.

I'm beyond all reasoning then on nearly all my cars. Laughing

I think you have to look at what Brad and Tim were saying about value.

I wouldn't give up my fastback for any reason other than a serious accident. It wouldn't matter what it needed. I only gave Joe £300 for it but must have spent 4 times that in the parts that's on it. Fair enough not all specifically repairs, mostly uprating (modifications) but still way more than the car's worth.

As for the Sterling, as and when that gets finished that'll have probably cost at least 4 or 5 times the £400 I paid for it.

Not as much on the R reg though. It has lots of new parts fitted but most of them were silly cheap. Mind it was double the price of my fastback. Laughing

Paid a whole £600 for it. Laughing

At the end of the day you have to look at the long term if you're planning to keep a car. Worth spending a little more in the first place or making a bit more of an effort sometimes I think.

I am looking at getting a Stainless system for my Coupé. What really bothers me is the noise it will make. Not decided between single or twin outlets (as standard) yet...

Have a word with Rich C.

You can basically have the exhaust set to your liking at a lot of places.

Twin pipes on a single box IMO as OE.

Think mine is definately coming off. Above 4500rpm it sounds like a tank, its really really loud. I haven't got time to think about adding another box somewhere on the system. Unless I remove the cente resonator box which has nothing in it and replace it with a packed straight through silencer.
I'll just repair my old exhaust again which feels just as quick, if not quicker cos I'm not embarrased to floor it. My old backbox sounded perfect.
