1987 Rover 825 sterling

PostPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 4:31 pm    Post subject: Hello Reply with quote

Hi all, I thought I'd show my face here, as I rescued the 825 XX Sterling mentioned in your eBay section a couple of weeks ago.
It is now up and running, and in daily use.
It has covered 56k, and has full history, 2 previous owners.
If you are as sad as me, you'll appreciate the ARG dealer numberplates, rear window sticker, and (incredibly) tax disc holder!
It needed a new water pump, as the owner had not kept his eye on the antifreeze strength. I bought it as a non-runner, but a quick clean of the distributer cap soon had it running. I did the pump and cambelt, and started using it that night.
Since then I've put two rear tyres on.
It still overheated a little after a good thrashing, which I have now solved, thanks to a leaking heater valve.
I plan to flush the system, and treat it to a new thermostat just to be on the safe side.
I've slowly been making my way around the car on the cleaning front, these pics are from before any tidying had been done.
I'll keep you updated as to how it goes.
Thanks to Alex W for tipping me off about this car.
I like Austin Rover a little bit.
Cheers,
Red Throbber

Welcome.

Now, all you need is some TWR bumpers, a boot spoiler and some side skirts.......... Smile

Welcome to the site from a fellow Rover 825 Sterling owner, I bet yours didnt have flat paint, crusty alloys and a silly spoiler when you bought it Laughing

Welcome to the site.

Our panicking over the heads/valves was overkill then. That's good.

You're not joking there!
I took a real chance on it, but the old boy who owned it had it for 14 years, and turned out to be as straight as you like.
The car has never lived outside it's town of registration (Ellesmere Port), and it really is in good condition.
Sometimes you can just tell a good car by the clues.
I was worried about the engine and gearbox, but both units are fault-free.
It starts instantly, drives perfectly, and (now) ticks over well.
A couple of little jobs to do, but for a 23 year old Rover, pretty well as good as the day it was made. All the paint is factory, and it has never been welded anywhere.
My daughter loves the reclining seats, to the point I've asked her not to keep using them, for fear of them breaking!!!

Hello and welcome, look forward to hearing more about your new car.

I have to admire you getting the cambelt and water pump all sorted the day you got the car!
