Looking for a small LCD TV

Post by CHR15E » Fri Oct 10, 2008 9:17 pm

Basically I'm after a cheap 14 or 15" LCD TV.

Prefered with freeview built in.

Any recommendations on a place to look or a specific model etc?

Does it have to be new?

If not, I've a workmate whose brother runs an electronics shop. They do repairs, recons, all that biz. He has that kind of thing on the go all the time.

No not really. Only going in the kitchen.

The old CRT in there packed up today so it seems like the time to upgrade.

Is this the Asda one? £135 on the web including postage, thanks for not a lot! No mention of freeview though.

If you change your mind on a flat screen I have a 20" tele/video spare chris.

If you are adament though I would suggest looking for a 19", they arent much more expensive than the 15's but screen quality is hell of alot better usually or if you can stretch a few quid more you get an even better 22"

I've just got one of these myself:
22" LG

Picture on it is great, I know they do a 19" and 20" verions too

It's not cash that's the problem. Space is a factor largely. Anything larger won't fit where the old one was, thanks for the offer though.

The TV that's been in the kitchen was just an old Matsui 14" CRT. It packed up yesterday so the plan was to replace it. Then thought that an LCD made more sense and it should have freeview in it if that's the way to go.

Chris: Guy I told you about only has CRTs that size atm. Smallest LCD he has just now is 21". He reckons 14" is most sought after size, and he sells them pretty much as soon as he gets them in. I told him next one he gets around 14" to give me first dibs, so if you don't get fixed up elsewhere he still might come good.

As for price, he says the last one he sold was 18mths-2yrs old, as new, for £60, which I spoze aint too bad.

Hey Chris,

There are 2 published figures when comparing flat screen TVs.

Contrast (measured as in 350:1, the higher number better)
Brightness (measured in candelas per metre squared)

There are other things to look at but not that will concern you too much in this size set.

A higher contrast figure is the key one. A TV with a higher contrast will provide blacker blacks, whiter whites and better, more realistic shades of colour...especially in dark colours).

As for brightness, this is only key if it is being used in a well lit area. A candela is the light of one std candle....the lighter the room in which it is being viewed, the more light the tv needs to pump out to be seen clearly, like reading your mobile phone screen in direct sunlight.

Somebody mentioned ebuyer. They are a good firm...trustworthy and usually good value.

Dont worry too much about brand as the smaller LCDs are largely generic.

...avoid a built in DVD if possible, whilst the TV may be good, the integrated DVDs, even on good brands have a poor reliability record.

I havent looked buy try bigpockets and svp too.

If at all possible, buy from a supermarket, they have the best returns policies.

Hope this is some help...and if anyone else needs any electrical goods advice, I am happy to help, whether its a washing machine or a hifi.

Carl

Thanks Carl, didn't know some of that.

To be honest with it only being for the kitchen quality is not that important.

I've got my uncle on the scout at Lidl and the like as he goes there quite a lot.
