The other thing that came of the MOT on Michelle's car was that the rear near side brake was binding slightly, i guess it is not quite releasing fully.
The MOT chap said he thought they just needed cleaning out.
I have looked at the "sticky" on this section for changing pads and discs so think i will be ok but i am not sure what is meant by winding back the piston (?). Is this done so that the rust and grime can be removed?
If any other advice could be given it would be most appreciated.
Many thanks. _________________ Regards

You have to wind them back rather than force them on the rear that's all.
Like the other thread I have some loose outside so can get pics. Or let you have a look when you're here Saturday. _________________ Chris

If you look into the caliper, at the face of the piston, you will see that it has 4 slots. These are used with the special tool (or a set of long nosed pliers or a metal bar) to wind the piston back into the caliper.
You rotate the piston clockwise (as you look at its face) and the screw mechanism in the handbrake adjuster then draws the piston back into the caliper. If you just force it back in then you will break it. After winding back in it should have freed off a lot of the grot but I also squirt a little WD40 under the piston seal before winding back to lubricate it a bit.
When you've finished winding the piston in, it will still rotate but not go back any further. make sure that you line it up with the slots pointing at north, south, east and west relative to the caliper so that the lug on the padslines up.
Don't forget to follow the correct adjustment procedure - reassmble, pump up with the foot brake and then you should find the handbrake is OK. _________________ Site owner (for my sins)
