Well had this car laid up since mid Dec09 due tax expiring, and me wanting to put all my cars on a single insurance policy and sync the taxes with the green V reg (expiring Feb). The single policy didnt work out due buggeration with Tradex, but I did sit out till now for the tax synchro. I do find three cars makes for having to do either tax or insurance (and dont forget MoT's) on one of them almost every month of the year, so wanted to get them into one hit.

Didnt start it up at all since parking it up, just been out doing it now, having recharged the battery last night. Started first time, idled 12-1300rpm for about 5 mins, then settled down nicely under the 1000 mark. (I spent that time looking for the radio code on me computer - its Brads ex Tickford R681 that came to me via Mo).

Went to pull away expecting lumps of pad to come off on the discs, after some cautious reverse/fwd rocking with the gearbox, found it was a ridge in my paving slabs and the brakes were completely free - result!

Just to explain, I have (imperfect) space for three cars. One in the mouth of my driveway, boot overlapping the front corner at the side of the house, another parked longways across the house width, but the third has to get blocked in behind the first one all the way down the side return. So no access to all three at once, and this is where this red one was living on SORN.

So if anyone remembers "Butterflies" with Wendy Craig et al, when Father and the sons all moved their cars together you can imagine the scene I just went through!

Its a right bugger not having all three accessible at once, tempting to get a residents permit for the street for one of them, but just dont trust general public's manouevering these days!!!

Anyway, it was a real joy to get the red one into service again and I am so looking forward to driving it to work tomorrow! Still my favourite of the fleet! :D :D

I know what it's like to want a car back on the road.

My fastback has been on sorn since the end of Dec. Left it off the raod with the weather being rubbish. That's turned into now. I was very tempted to go and tax it this morning.

Though I'll wait till Thursday now.

You airline pilots get paid too much - normal people couldn't afford that.

Sorry Rich didnt mean to be insensitive - what you getting up to out east anyways? Hope you find a decent Rover out there and stay on here!

I can only do it because of budgeting throughout the year. I sacrifice half my monthly pocket money (vs my better half) to my car fund, and thats my spending limit.

(There may be stiff discussions when I want to have the red one repainted in a year or so... )

You weren't - I was just taking the p***.

I'm due to be off to Abu Dhabi on friday next week to start at a flying school out there, doing the same sort of MCC and JOC training that I've been doing up to now - but on a bigger, tax free salary. The family will join me a bit later after the girls finish their school year.

It's quite a big step!

Sun shining so had a bucket and sponge morning. First wash since pre Dec09. Been driving it again for last few weeks, driving as well as always! :D

Just a basic wash/chamois off and glass clean/polish. Didnt get to the wheels or interior, ran out of steam. Perhaps tomorrow.

At last some pics that show its colour properly without it being wet! Must clay and polish this year...

8) That really does look very nice, especially considering the age. Loving the colour.

Restoration complete!

Post by mjc9967 » Sun Nov 07, 2010 10:51 pm

Well its been a while, since July actually. This car is finally back with me following its restoration. Had a bugger load of camera trouble since Wednesday, finally submitted to using a mobile phone camera today. The resulting quality isn't bad (the phone camera is only 3.2megapixels and each image is around 300kB instead of 1.5-2.5MB which I usually present), although the colour suffers in the pics from a bit of dulling and flattening that is not there in the flesh. Also, the sun refused to come out, so all the pics I got so far are under a cloudy sky. I kept a lot of similar shots because I like how the colour changes with slight ambient light condition changes, and I wanted to show this.

I am uploading the pics as we speak (its gonna be damn pic heavy!), hope they get done tonight.

In brief, the car was largely dismantled, all exterior and interior trims removed, fully body repaired and repainted, new windscreen, new bumper finishers, new badges and plates (thanks to Brad for some help in this area). Mechanically: new brakes, exhaust, cylinder head gasket, tappets, timing belt and some other things. Will detail further after the pics are through...

Well done if you got to the end of that lot - hope you enjoyed them!

Will do fuller write up of the work tomorrow hopefully as I'm running out of midnight oil.

Thanks for looking so far

Well, Mark...that turned out superbly well. The Mini Centre did a great job. I hope it drives as smooth as the finish. Nice work and thanks for the pics.
